June 17,1999 Subject: Updated Information for FCC Equipment Authorization Certification Newbridge Networks Corporation has just received the updated version for the NIU unit, which improves the performance of the system and cleans the layout of the motherboard. By doing so, the spurious level and the spectrum shape has improved and now does comply with the FCC part 101 requirements. Date: April 30/99 Mainstreet Broadband Wireless (Release 1.1) System Overview/ Operational Description INTRODUCTION This document provides a system overview for the Release 1.1 Newbridge Mainstreet Broadband Wireless Product . The information listed is a simplified version of the overall system technical specification. System Overview The Broadband Wireless product portfolio is a family of products that are designed to work together. The Broadband Wireless System is a network of Network Interface Units connected to Base Stations via wireless links and the Base Stations are, in turn, connected to the ATM Backbone Network via wired or point to point wireless links. The network is augmented by a Network Manager. A high level view of the network is shown below (Figure 1.0). As shown in the figure, the cellular network structure is based on overlapped 4-sectored cells. A BTS may also function as a backbone component. • Base Transceiver System (BTS) The BTS is the hub that delivers and collects all the wireless traffic from and to the subscribers in the BTS coverage area. The BTS is also the linking point between the subscribers and the Backbone Network. The BTS can also support standard 36170 wireline services. • Network Interface Unit (NIU) A NIU is situated at the subscriber location. The NIU is used to provide a wireless connection between the CPE and the BTS. In this release two types of NIUs are supported, each providing a single interface. Backbone Network The Backbone Network is an ATM network and/or TDM network connected to the wireless network at one or more points. The 36170 based BTS can easily work with the backbone system through standard cell relay interfaces, such as T1/E1, DS3/E3, or OC3/STM1, etc. Base Transceiver System The Rls 1.1 base station platform is based on Rls 4.0 of the 36170 multi services platform. The card cages are 19” rack assemblies with the following dimensions: • 48 cm (19”) wide • 53 cm (21”) high • 29 cm (11.5”) deep Single Shelf BTS System Figure 1.3 shows a typical single shelf base-station / backbone. In this configuration, all switching and control functions are self contained in a single peripheral shelf. Full control and switching fabric redundancy is supported as shown in the figure. Non redundant configurations are also available through de-populating the appropriate control and hub cards. A single shelf supports 12 universal card slots (UCS), with an aggregate switching capacity of 1.6 Gbps. A single slot is capable of supporting up to an OC-3 of bandwidth. For the Rls 1.1 product , the TDMA ARIC cards occupy two peripheral card slots. In addition to the UCS slots, the peripheral shelf supports a fully redundant (X and Y switching planes) switching matrix using two additional card slots. These are optionally populated with either switching hub cards (single shelf configurations) or regular hub cards (in multishelf configurations). General Description OTRU 05/04/99 8:15 AM The OTRU (Outdoor Transmitter Receiver Unit) is part of an LMDS (Local Multipoint Distribution System) networking system. The OTRU provides a wireless interface between the HUB RF equipment and the subscriber. Within the OTRU, a frequency translation from the transmitted and received RF to the baseband intermediate frequencies, is accomplished through the use of local oscillators and mixers. The baseband frequencies are passed to and from a modem, located inside the subscriber’s premises, through a coax connection. The frequency translation is accomplished using two CRO’s (coaxial resonating oscillators). The CRO’s are phase looked to a 20 MHz crystal reference, which provides a stability of 20 ppm over temperature and time for 17 years. Using a common reference, ensures frequency coherence between the transmitter and receiver paths inside the OTRU. The 20 ppm stability of the 20 MHz reference, satisfies the stability requirement for the radio system. The CRO’s are multiplied in frequency to generate the required local oscillator frequency. Two frequency conversions are needed, on both the transmitter and receiver paths, to produce the proper RF and IF, respectively. Due to the nonlinear nature of mixer and multiplier components, spurious signals are generated in the form of harmonics and mixing products of the fundamental and intermediate frequencies. The proper selection of mixing components, which naturally reject these products, reduces the level of unwanted signals. One or more bandpass filters are used after each mixer and multiplication stage. The filters are designed to pass the wanted signals but reject unwanted spurious. Making use of the frequency limitations, on both active and passive components, help attenuate some of the harmonics and mixing products. The OTRU was designed to utilize the cutoff frequency of WR-28 waveguide to significantly reject critical mixing products and frequency images at the RF output. Although the OTRU does have voltage variable attenuators for temperature compensation, it does not posses automatic gain control circuitry. The maximum TX output power is limited by the finite output power of the last amplifier stage. The typical saturated output power transmitted from the OTRU is 24 dBm or 0.251 W. As an added safety measure, the OTRU will turn off the transmitter if for any reason the local oscillators lose phase lock with the crystal reference.

Newbridge offers various types of in-building NIUs to deliver high speed data and Internet, voice, video and multimedia services to the desktop. Small office home office (SOHO) environ- ments can benefit from NIUs designed to provide Ethernet LAN connectivity and PBX extension from the corporate network. Remote offices gain communications advantages through the cost-effective pro- visioning of high speed Internet access via Ethernet, as well as connections supporting POTS or T1/E1 through multiple T1/E1 or fractional OC-3c/STM-1 links. The NIU resides on the customer premises and is connected on the network side to an external transceiver that combines the functions of transmitter and receiver. The customer side connects to customer premises equipment, such as specialized NTUs (network termination units), PBXs (private branch exchanges), routers or video servers. NIUs can “see” the entire downstream spectrum and transmit on any upstream frequency. However an NIU receives on one tuned frequency channel and transmits on one frequency channel at a time. The NIU is connected to an external trans- ceiver in a fixed position with one antenna. Multiple NIUs can be combined at the customer premises (up to two per outdoor transceiver/antenna), by splitting the IF cabling using inline passive combiners and splitters. NIUs are managed using SNMP (simple network management protocol). In addition, once it has registered with the network, NIUscan be configured from a MainStreetXpress 45020 Element Manager or an NMTI session can be initiated via Telnet from a MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager. It can provide a combination of services, including data, high speed Internet, voice, video and interactive media. Situated at customer premises, this equipment consists of an environmentally sealed, integrated antenna/outdoor transceiver, and an NIU. The NIU provides the termination interface to the customer’s in-building network. The integrated outdoor RF assembly consists of the following: •30 cm (12 in.) or 60 cm (24 in.) high gain antenna •outdoor transceiver Solid State Customer Site Outdoor Transceiver Reliable and cost-effective, the customer site outdoor transceiver (OTR) is integrated with its respective antenna and provides the following functionality: •Multicarrier, wide bandwidth low noise amplification and down-conversion •Single carrier up-conversion and power amplification •Integrated antennas are available in both high gain (+42 dBi) and low gain (+36 dBi) variants, and are designed to be installed on the antenna tower or building rooftop at the customer premises •DC power and up/down IF signals delivered via single coaxial cable Customer Site Antenna (24 - 31.3 GHz) The high gain (+42 dBi) or low gain (+36 dBi) customer site antenna is collocated with its respective transceiver.
