USER MANUAL DCM000000019 Printed: 01.01.20,12:34 Revision Date:1/20/01 4 Theory Of Operation An OFR, or On Frequency Repeater, is a radio repeater that simultaneously receives and transmits a single narrow band radio channel on exactly the same frequency. The OFR accomplishes its repeater function without store and forward circuitry, or expensive conventional simulcasting techniques. The fact that the same frequency is retransmitted by an OFR means that additional frequency allocations are not required in situations where an existing radio coverage pattern needs to be extended. The most common OFR applications are the extension of above ground signals into buildings, tunnels, vehicles or the extension of radio coverage patterns into outdoor shaded areas such as deep valleys. From an applications standpoint, an OFR is very similar to a regular two-way radio repeater. On Frequency Radio Repeaters can be combined using regular two-way radio multicoupling or duplexing equipment and have input and output signal characteristics to those of regular transmitters and receivers. The one special consideration in OFR systems is that of input to output antenna isolation. This must be carefully engineered for each installation. Standard On Frequency Radio Repeaters are designed for indoor use only and are intended for mounting in a standard EIA 19 inch rack. Modular design of OFR circuitry allows for easy servicing, stocking of spares, adaptability and upgrade ability. IMPORTANT NOTE: The OFR400 UHF LINKnet FM Modules described in this Manual draw about 50% more current than the OFR800 FM Modules. A Maximum of five may be used in a LINKnet OFR1000 Card-Cage with no other modules. With other Modules the maximums are... Key Features & Benefits Easy Set-up / Configuration All level settings, including programming of frequency, gain, AGC, etc are easily configured into the module via the LINKnetSystem Controller or through PC software provided during set-up. Constant 5 Watts Per Channel AGC (automatic gain control) and limiting provides constant high output power ensuring predictable, above ground extended coverage and complete coverage inside large buildings. Up to 140 dB RF Gain High gain ensures constant RF output even with marginal receive signals. LINKnetprovides precise gain control to ensure consistent and reliable communications. Responds Only to Assigned Channels The LINKnetUHF module will not re-transmit noise, interference or adjacent channels. Only those frequencies desired will be retransmitted, ideal for congested urban or high density RF environments. Vendor Independent The LINKnetUHF module is compatible with all vendors’ equipment, including conventional, trunked radio and paging formats. Fault Alarming and Remote Control All LINKnetmodules are capable of local and remote alarm control when used with the LINKnetSystem Controller. Thermal control, up/downlink over/under current, AGC,DGC and module fail alarms are available (See the LINKnetSystem catalog sheet for details) Off the air Signal Pick Up or Optional Fiber-Optic Fed Amplification The LINKnet UHF modules are configured to take signals ‘off the air’. An optional single mode fiber-optic interface is also available. If fiber-optic links are used the uplink path is replaced with an RF to fiber-optic interface. At the base station, or donor site, a fiber to RF interface is supplied to complete the link. LINKnet TM UHF MODULE Product Description The LINKnet TM - UHF module is a synthesized ‘on- frequency-repeater’ that receives and transmits on the same frequency, at the same time, extending two-way voice and data communications into shielded areas. The LINKnetUHF module provides continuous and transparent communications, maintaining a constant RF power at all times and is ideal for extending UHF radio services into buildings, tunnels, subways, malls and isolated outdoor areas. Available in off-the-air or fiber-optic fed models, the LINKnetUHF series will cover the full range of UHF from 406 MHz to 512 MHz. See reverse for Sub-band selections.
