The test procedures, as described in American National Standards Institute C63.4-1992, were employed. A description of the product and operating configuration, the various provisions of the rules, the methods for determining compliance, and a detailed summary of the results are included within this test report. 2.0Description of Equipment The Spectrum Wireless LAN is a radio in PCMCIA format that allows a laptop to remotely hook up to a LAN. ("Symbol"), requests that the Block Diagram, Schematics, and Operational Description Exhibits of the above referenced application be withheld from routine availability for public inspection pursuant to Section 0.459 of the Commissions Rules and Freedom of Information Act ("FOIA") Exemption 4, 5 U.S.C. 552(b)(4). Moreover, the documents contain "commercial information" within the scope of FOIA Exemption 4. This information is the product of Symbol's investment of money, personnel, and other resources. The result of that investment is a fairly earned position in the marketplace. Premature release of the information threatens substantial and unwarranted harm to Symbol's competitive position. For these reasons, Symbol has taken pains to keep this technical information confidential, and intends to continue doing so. Symbol customarily withholds this information from persons outside the employ of Symbol and certain of its suppliers and contractors, and even within these groups routinely limits access to persons having a particular need for the information. If the Commission were to make these documents public, it would be giving away hard won fruits of Symbol's labors without compensation. It appears that the device can operate at 100 mW and 500 mW and the device was only tested at 60 mW. Please explain. Can the device operate at higher output power? Additional tests may be required. The device is a 60 mW device only. Due to miscommunication between engineering and technical publications the preliminary version of the users manual misstated the power level of the device. As shown in the response to 11167 all mention of power level has been removed from it. 2) The DOC label exhibit was unreadable. Please resubmit it. Done. Conf. No. EA95624Correspondence Ref. 11692 3) Verify that the list of antennas provided is complete. Antenna #'s 7,8,13 and 14 were not listed or shown in the photo's. Please explain. In the antenna section for these particular antennas I stated “Not certified with this radio”. Perhaps a better choice of words is “Not submitted with this device”. The antenna list is complete without 7, 8, 13, and 14. 4) The RF safety exhibit has never been submitted. Please provide it and place it in the RF exposure info folder. In correspondence number 11149 paragraph 4 you state “The RF exposure information identified 19 antennas, .....” I will submit a new RF Exposure Info attachment. It is available from Amphenol through distributors but not commercial electronic parts retailers. Special tools and advanced assembly skills are necessary to attach this connector to a cable. The Amphenol part number is 908-43300. Drawings of these connectors are attached. The other end of the coaxial cable is attached to a polarized BNC connector. The polarized BNC connector is similar to a regular BNC type connector but is made unique by swapping the inner conductor sex. This connector and its mate can be purchased from the manufacturer, M/A COM Inc. A drawing of this connector is attached. In some cases the coax cable is directly soldered to the antenna. The following antennas are options for antennas for the LA 3000/4000 family of WLAN PC Cards. Spectrum 24© RF Exposure Safety: Symbol Technologies, Inc. uses a uniform approach across our line of Spectrum 24© Wireless LAN devices. Spectrum 24© utilizes PC cards that can be purchased in either a 100mW or 350mW versions at 1 and 2 MB/s or 60 mW at 11 MB/s. All antennas in the Spectrum 24 family are compliant with exposure levels when used with the highest output power radios. Symbol Technoloiges, Inc. bases its conformance to safe RF exposure limits on its two worst case situations using the 350 mW version of the PC card using the same antennas as the 100 mW version. The worst case situations for RF exposure are the Parabolic Grid for mobile devices and the body worn WWC1049 terminal with internal1040 antenna. Both use the high power version of the PC Card H9PLA3021-500. MPE distance Calculations Calculations of the MPE distance for each antenna are based on using equation (3) of OET Bulletin 65. Equation (3) was used instead of equations (11) through (18) for ease of computation justified by the fact that equation (3) leads to calculations of higher field strength and a greater MPE distance. All distances are calculated using 350 mW, the worst case situation across the Spectrum 24© product line R=SQRT(PG/4πS)S=1mW/cm2 P=350mWG=10^(9.5 dBi/10)=8.9 R=SQRT(350*8.9/4π)=15.7cm In the case of the Parabolic Grid the MPE distance is 15.7 cm.
