This board was constructed in an ESD (electroโ€“static discharge) protected environment. This is because most of the semiconductor devices used in this board are susceptible to damage by static discharge. Depending on the magnitude of the charge, device substrates can be punctured or destroyed by contact or mere proximity of a static charge. The results can cause degradation of device perfor- mance, early failure, or immediate destruction. These charges are generated in numerous ways such as simple contact, separation of materials, and normal motions of persons working with static sensitive devices. When handling or servicing equipment containing static sensitive devices, adequate precautions must be taken to prevent device damage or destruction. Only those who are thoroughly familiar with industry accepted techniques for handling static sen- sitive devices should attempt to service circuitry with these devices. In all instances, measures must be taken to prevent static charge buildโ€“up on work surfaces and persons handling the devices. Marine Systems Aviation Recorders Rev. 02 Page iv July 29/03 Automatic Identification System RETURN MATERIAL POLICY Components and spare parts purchased from L--3 that are discrepant for any of the following reasons may be re- turned immediately provided the extended value of the parts are in excess of $100.00. 1. Overshipments Quantity of parts received in excess of quantity specified on purchase order. 2. Wrong Part Numbers Receipt of parts numbered other than those identified on a customer order where L--3 has not advised the cus- tomer by purchase order acknowledgment, by telex, or by notification on the shipping document that the received part is a replacement for the ordered part. 3. Parts Nonconforming to Specifications If the extended value of the items is less than $100.00, the items are to be scrapped instead of returned. When this occurs, notification must be sent to L--3 advising: (1) the reason for the rejection; (2) the items are less than $100.00 in extended value and have been scrapped, and; (3) whether credit or replacement is desired. If you wish to return material to L--3 for reasons other than warranty returns or those specified above, please contact an L--3 Account Administrator for authorization before proceeding. A Return Authorization Number will be assigned at this time. Your request should specify the relevant Return Authorization Number, purchase order number, part num- ber, quantity and the reason you wish the part returned. To assist us in processing these items more efficiently, we ask that all returned goods be accompanied by paperwork that clearly indicates the following: 1. Reason for return. 2. Purchase Order Numbers. 3. Correspondence Reference Number. 4. Return Authorization Number. 4. Improperly titled Section 2 (formerly Section 9) was changed from รฌDry Heat Storageรฎ to รฌDry Heat Functionalรฎ and all related information corrected to reflect the change. The original Enclosure I containing the customer provided data was deleted and the data distributed among Enclosures appropriate to each test Section. Middlebury, Vermont Unit: Automatic Identification System (AIS) Evaluated: May 27 to July 25, 2003 I. Applicable Standards: The unit described in this report was measured for certification with the Code of Federal Regulations Chapter 47 โ€“ "Telecommunication, Part 2 โ€“ Frequency Allocations and Radio Treaty Matters: General Rules and Regulations, Subpart J โ€“ Equipment Authorization Procedures (2002)." Measurements required were per paragraphs 2.1046 RF Power Output, 2.1047 Modulation Characteristics, 2.1049 Occupied Bandwidth, 2.1051 Spurious Emissions at Antenna Terminals, 2.1053 Field Strength of Spurious Radiation, 2.1055 Frequency Stability, and 2.1091 Radiofrequency Radiation Exposure Evaluation: Mobile Devices. The AIS was also measured for verification of compliance with "CFR47 โ€“ Telecommunication, Part 80 โ€“ Stations in the Maritime Services, Subpart E: General Technical Standards (2002)." Paragraphs used were 80.205 Bandwidths, 80.209 Transmitter Frequency Tolerances, 80.211 Emission Limitations, 80.213 Modulation Requirements, 80.215 Transmitter Power, and 80.217 Suppression of Interference Aboard Ships. Additionally, the AIS was measured for verification of compliance with "CFR47, Part 15 โ€“ Radio Frequency Devices, Subpart B: Unintentional Radiators, Paragraph 15.109, Radiated Emissions Limits (2002)." Measurement procedures were in accordance with ANSI C63.4, "Methods of Measurement of Radio-Noise Emissions from Low-Voltage Electrical and Electronic Equipment in the Range of 9 kHz to 40 GHz (2000)," IEC 61993-2, "Maritime Navigation and Radiocommunication Equipment and Systems โ€“ Automatic Identification Systems (AIS), Part 2: Class A Shipborne Equipment of the Universal AIS โ€“ Operational and Performance Requirements, Methods of Test and Required Test Results (December 2001)," and FCC OET Bulletin 65, "Evaluating Compliance with FCC Guidelines for Human Exposure to Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Fields (August 1997)." Unit Tested: The L3 Communications Aviation Recorders Corporation, Automatic Identification System provides continuous signal and data transmission for ship identification. The AIS uses 12- to 24- VDC power and has TDMA/DSC transmitters and TDMA/GPS/DSC receivers. It consists of the two-piece metal enclosure with connector hardware, the transmit/receive circuits, the micro- processor/data-storage electronics, and the antenna interface. The table below describes the unit tested to determine compliance with the standards: Model/P/NManufacturerH/W/D in cmSerial Number AIS/AISA1-000-00L3 Communications8/15/20210455 The highest frequency investigated is ten times the AIS highest fundamental (1.63 GHz). IEC 61993-2, Paragraph 13 masks are used to demonstrate modulation characteristics. III. Measurement Location: The GME laboratory and Open Area Test Site (OATS) are located at 219 Blake Roy Road, Middlebury, VT. The OATS is a 3-meter site complete with antenna positioner, ground plane and motorized turntable. The OATS is constructed in accordance with ANSI C63.7-1992 and complies with the requirements for radiated emissions testing in ANSI C63.4-2000 and CISPR 16-1993. The electromagnetic laboratory is constructed in accordance with CE immunity standards and ANSI C63.4-2000 (conducted emissions). GME is internationally accredited by the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA) and meets the quality requirements in EN 45001-1989 and ISO/IEC 17025 (1999), "General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories." Section IX contains the results summarized in the table below.
