Fully compatible with Savi software and fixed and portable Savi readers, this tag features omnidirectional line-of-sight communication. Battery life, using lithium cells, is typically four years (depending on the type of operation). The Savi SensorTag ST-674 is safe for operation around live ordnance. It is also compatible with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) In-transit Visibility (ITV) network and can be detected by existing Savi RFID infrastructure. Features ◆Temperature and humidity sensors provide updated information about the environment that the tag is in ◆433 MHz, active RFID technology with up to 300-foot (91.44 meters) range for monitor, wake-up, and RF write/read ◆123 KHz receiver for slot-level, portal, or chokepoint tag wake-up and short range commissioning (12 feet (3.7 meters) or less) ◆Audible beeper helps locate tag ◆Small form factor design ◆Rugged, weatherproof design ◆Powered by a replaceable lithium battery CHAPTER 1About the Savi SensorTag ST-674 6Savi SensorTag ST-674 Installation Guide Tag Description Environmental Sensors The environmental sensors monitor and record the temperature and humidity of the tag’s surrounding area at user-specified times in an environmental log. You can set maximum and minimum temperature and humidity threshold. If the temperature or humidity should rise above or fall below the threshold, the device writes the time and date of the deviation to an alarm log and sends an RF beacon to surrounding fixed readers. For example, if you are monitoring in an area that needs to be kept at temperatures between x and y degrees to preserve a product, you can set the Savi SensorTag ST-674 to RF beacon mode and record the date and time whenever the temperature deviates from your specified range. RFID Communication Module The communication module operates at 433 MHz, enabling the Savi SensorTag ST-674 to communicate back to the Savi network with excellent RF performance in both metallized and non line-of-sight environments. The temperature sensor inside the tag gauges the surrounding environment’s temperature when air passes through this vent For More Information Savi SensorTag ST-674 Installation Guide7 For More Information Guides to Read For information about using: ◆Signposts, see the Savi Signpost SP-65X Series Installation Guide. ◆Fixed readers, see the Savi Fixed Reader SR-650-101 Installation Guide. ◆Mobile readers, see the Savi Mobile Reader SMR-650 for the Intermec 751G/A Mobile Computer and PC User Guide. ◆Mobile device software, see the Guide to Savi SmartChain for Mobile Devices and Guide to Savi Transportation Security System for Mobile Devices. ◆Desktop software, see the Guide to Savi SmartChain Site Manager and Savi SmartChain for Client Tools User Guide. Replacing the Main Battery Savi SensorTag ST-674 Installation Guide13 The tag beeps twice if you install a fully charged battery. The tag beeps three times if you install a battery with low charge; replace it with a charged battery. When removing and replacing a charged battery, you may need to wait a few seconds after replacing the battery to hear the confirmation beep. 4.Replace the battery cover. Turn the battery cover counterclockwise 1/4 to 1/2 of a turn to properly seat the cover. Turn the battery cover clockwise until it fits flush with the tag case. Be careful not to overtighten. Make sure the battery cover is completely closed and that it is not cross-threaded. 5.Dispose of the used battery according to local safety requirements. CHAPTER 2Installing the Tag 14Savi SensorTag ST-674 Installation Guide Tag Placement Savi Technology recommends that you mount Savi SensorTag ST-674 by adhering the tag and supplied plastic mounting sleeve with pressure sensitive tape ( PST) to the inside or outside of a Class VIII container or plastic, cardboard, or wood container or box. You can also loosely place the tag inside a non-metallic container or box. PST Reliability and Durability The only brand of PST that Savi Technology recommends for mounting SaviTags is 3M Corporation’s Automotive Acrylic Plus Attachment Tape. For ease of installation, during manufacturing Savi installs this PST on the back of the mounting sleeve. PST mounting kits are also available for separate purchase. Once a mounting sleeve is fastened to an asset, you can leave it on the asset even after Savi SensorTag ST-674 is removed so it is available for future use with other compatible SaviTags. Prior to re-use, visually inspect the PST-mounted sleeve to make sure it is attached securely. If necessary, reinstall the sleeve using new PST. 3M Corporation has conducted extensive environmental testing on their Automotive Acrylic Plus Attachment Tape. In addition, Savi has conducted its own independent environmental tests of PST. The U.S. Army (Tobyhanna Army Depot) has also tested PST for use on surfaces treated with Chemical Agent Resistant Coating (CARC). All these tests confirm that PST is an appropriate choice for mounting SaviTags. ◆Savi Technology successfully conducted the following tests upon samples of 3M PST: ❖Extreme temperature -40ºC to +158ºF (–40º to +70º Celsius) ❖Step test (200 pounds applied in shear) ❖Shock (140g or 120 lbs.) ❖Vibration (MIL-STD-810E) ❖Salt fog (MIL-STD-810E) ❖Corrosive liquids ❖Peel test (50 pounds of peel force) Savi’s tests confirm the adhesion integrity and reliability of 3M PST. Tag Placement Savi SensorTag ST-674 Installation Guide15 ◆3M Corporation conducted a longevity test of PST. They found no significant degradation in the performance of PST even after five years of service on a test vehicle. As long as the surface is prepared properly, PST will work reliably for five years or longer. ◆3M Corporation compared the peel strength of a new roll of PST versus a roll that had been aged 21 months. In all cases, the aged roll matched performance of the new roll in tests conducted over a 72-hour period. Achieving Maximum Communication Savi SensorTag ST-674 achieves a 300-foot (91.44 meters) read range from SR-410 and SR-650 fixed readers. To achieve the most consistent communications with the tag, the fixed readers must be mounted: ◆To have an unobstructed line of sight to the tag ◆At 20 feet (6 meters) or higher ◆With the reader dome pointed downward The following photos show specific Savi SensorTag ST-674 mounting locations on Class VIII containers. Typical locations include mounting the tag inside the middle of the container or on the outside of the container on a flat surface. CHAPTER 2Installing the Tag 16Savi SensorTag ST-674 Installation Guide Figure 2-1 Mounting locations are inside the Class VIII containers Mounting Savi SensorTag ST-674 The mounting method for Savi SensorTag ST-674 includes using pressure sensitive tape, nylon tie-wrap, and a plastic mounting sleeve. This method prevents accidental loss of the tag by sudden impact, vibration, or shock during transport. Savi SensorTag ST-674 includes these mounting fasteners: ◆PST ◆Nylon tie-wrap ◆Plastic mounting sleeve Mounting Savi SensorTag ST-674 Savi SensorTag ST-674 Installation Guide17 1.Clean the location on the container where the mounting sleeve is to be attached. 2.Obtain a mounting sleeve with PST installed and carefully remove the red protective film covering. Avoid touching the PST adhesive. 3.Position the sleeve horizontally or vertically, making sure there is at least 4 inches (10 cm) of clearance at the opening of the sleeve to allow the Savi SensorTag ST-674 to be inserted. Be sure that the surface to which you will apply the tape is flat, and that the sleeve can move freely to compress the tape in the next step. 4.When the sleeve is level, press it into place. Apply pressure to the tape strips by pushing firmly against the inside surface of the sleeve. To assure a good bond, apply as much finger pressure as possible and work fingers on the area over the tape strips. CHAPTER 2Installing the Tag 18Savi SensorTag ST-674 Installation Guide 5.Insert the tag into the sleeve and insert a wire loop or nylon tie-wrap through the two retaining ears. No tape curing time is required prior to installing the tag. The mounting sleeve is equipped with a tie-wrap groove to ensure that Savi SensorTag ST-674 is securely fastened. 6.To prevent the tag from dislodging from the tag mounting sleeve as a result of sudden impact or extreme shocks, insert the supplied tie-wrap through the sleeve. Page 1 of 4 American TCB May 16, 2006 RE: Savi Technology, Inc. FCC ID# KL7-674T-V1 Attention: Tim Johnson Please find our responses to your comments on this Application below: 1) Please provide appropriate internal and external photograph exhibits for this device. Uploaded a pdf file with the photos in them. Apologies for them being omitted from the original upload. Please note that the internal pictures are identical to those for the ST 673 as the internal circuit boards are identical. 2) The device appears larger than 8x10 cm and therefore the FCC 2 part statement (15.19(a)(3)) is expected to be placed on the device. The device actually measures 5cm x 15cm x 3cm and has no surface area larger than 80cm 2 . The variant with the metal bracket (model ST 673) measures slightly larger because a separate metal bracket is attached to the main enclosure, but the bracket is removable and, therefore, not appropriate to place the label on the bracket. Further, previous Savi Tags using the same enclosure have been approved without the need for the FCC 2-part statement being included on the label due to the small size of the product. It is requested that the ST 673 and ST 674 be treated as too small to necessitate the inclusion of the label. 3) Page 7 of the operational description appears to show > 5 sec transmit for the reader for wakeup and hello command (480 + 90 + 10). Please explain as it appears the reader is in excess of 15.231 timing requirements. The timing for the reader’s transmission is 4.8 seconds + 90ms + 10ms = 4.9 seconds (4800 + 90 + 10 = 4900). This meets the 15.231 limit for transmissions under 15.231(a). Page 2 of 4 4) Section 6.3.4.2 of the operational description mentions the pattern repeating up to 6 times (6 * 330 msec), but this would be in excess of the 1 second maximum transmit period. Please explain. The timing of the pulses described is a transmission time of 330ms followed by a silent period of 10 seconds repeated up to 6 times (i.e. the pattern of 3 pulses is not repeated 6 times, the pattern of three pulses followed by a 10 second silent period is repeated up to 6 times). 5) Information regarding 15.240 (a), (e), and (f) do not appear to be provided to the user. Please review. The operation under 15.240 is dictated by the reader and not by the tag. In a previous application it was, therefore, considered that these statements only belong with the readers capable of controlling the tags to operate under 15.240 and not the tags themselves, since use is transparent to the end user. Please advise if you still consider it necessary to include the statements in the manual for the tag. 6) Please explain how the device knows when it is communicating with a 15.240 device vs. a 15.231 device. The tag is controlled by a 15.240 certified Reader located at a Registered Site where the reader is specially configured to enable 15.240 Tag Read commands to be sent to the tag. The commands issued by the15.240 reader are what cause the tag to operate under 15.240. At other sites not Registered for 15.240 operation, Readers are only configured to enable 15.231 Tag Read commands. 7) Is the applicant fully aware of their responsibility under 15.240(f). Please have Savi comment. Savi understand the requirements and their responsibilities for the manufacture of devices that operate under 15.240. This is shown in the operational description, provided by Savi, on page 8, Read/Write Operations Under Section 15.240. As the readers that control the tags are responsible for initiating the tags responses under 15.240 it is suggested that the applicant has to address these issues in full in applications for readers operating under FCC 15.240. Page 3 of 4 8) Please provide further detail/justification of point to point signals being considered under 15.231(a) vs. 15.231(e). The point-to-point signals contain a combination of control and data information as permitted under 15.231(a) and as explained to the FCC in previous communications between Savi and the FCC. 15.231(a) permits transmissions to be initiated by human operation or other non- periodic external events. Point-to-point operations are initiated in two ways: (1.) by operators requesting control and data interaction with the tags, or (2.) through non-periodic events generated through the system control logic which in turn generate a command to the tag. 15.231(a) permits data to be combined with control functions in a single transmission. Point-to-point commands always include several ID fields which control the system response, and also include control bits indicating the state of the devices including battery status, alarm conditions triggered by sensors, and the results of data searches inside the device. These control fields may generate requests for service or maintenance, or in control decisions for the routing of the asset to its final destination. 9) Was the device investigated from 30 – 200 MHz. Test equipment does not necessarily support this. Preliminary scans in an anechoic chamber were performed from 30 MHz to 4GHz. No signals were observed below 300 MHz, therefore all OATS measurements were made between 400 MHz and 4.3 GHz. 10) This device appears to only use a 10% duty factor correction. How about the optional 25% payload? This device would appear to exceed FCC limits with a 25% payload. Also, in the case of duty factors other than 20 dB, both peak and average levels should be shown. The test data and report have been revised to include the calculated average values of the field strength for both 10% and 25% duty cycles. 11) Test Report does not appear to reference 15.240, while operational description and 731 form do. Please review. Test report and corresponding data have been updated to include data tables for 15.231(a) and 15.240. Page 4 of 4 12) Please document RBW and VBW setting used for various radiated tests. These have been included in the revised test data. Below 1 GHz all measurements made with a receiver with measu…
