TCB QUESTIONS -----Original Message----- From: Certification Manager [SMTP:[email protected] ] Sent: Wednesday, March 07, 2001 1:36 PM To: Tom Tidwell Subject: KUWINCELLSMR Hi Tom, I thought this one was going to be one I was able to grant straight off, but I got tripped up at the last moment by the following item. Please help me clear this up so I can issue the grant. Thanks! 1. Section 90.691(a) (1) requires 50+10 log(P) attenuation for frequencies removed up to 37.5KHz from the assigned channel band. This is kind of unusual because it is only 43 + 10 log(P) further out. That seems to translate into a -20dBm limit for some of the spurious emissions. This product has some that are -17dBm from the IM test. It would seem that it might be possible to pick channels which might have this high spur show up in the 37.5kHz next to the assigned channel. Please comment on how this device complies with 90.691 (a) (1) or tell me why you think it is not applicable. [Tom Tidwell] The attached file contains three plots. The first plot demonstrates the intermodulation with voice modulated carriers. The total composite power output is actually +9.87 dBm + 10Log(3) = +14.6 dBm. This is the power output that whould be listed on the grant for voice and analogue data modulation. The second plot shows the intermodulation products using 3 iDEN signals. The highest out-of-band intermodulation product is -29 dBm. There are also some products created in the signal generator as a result of the iDEN signals being created with an arbitrary waveform modulation generator (R&S AMIQ). Plot 3 shows the input (output of the signal generator). We are working with our local R&S technical support guy to filter these out. They are apparently a product of the baseband clock in the modulation generator. <<IntermodPlots.pdf> Cheers, Tom Best regards Barry C. Quinlan Certification & Telecom Manager Curtis-Straus LLC

Circuit Description Central Distribution Unit (CDU) The CDU is connected to a Repeater, BDA, or BTS via coaxial cable. The Downlink (Base-to- Mobile) transmit path is distributed to Remote Antenna Units (RAU). PDU card - The rf input signal is distributed to individual CDU cards (up to six per unit) via the Power Distribution (PDU) Board, which consists of simple passive power dividers. Also located on the PDU card is a pilot oscillator that simply generates a pilot tone that is filtered in the Remote Antenna Unit (RAU) and used to verify the rf link. This pilot tone is never transmitted wirelessly. CDU card - In the Downlink direction the CDU card consists of a SAW filter and rf to laser conversion module. Once the rf signal has been converted to light, it is distributed to a Remote Antenna Unit (RAU) via fiber cable. In the Uplink direction, the CDU card simply performs the opposite function. The optic signal fed from the RAU uplink output is converted to rf, amplified, filtered, and finally passed to the PDU card where it will be sent to the external repeater, BDA, or BTS equipment via coaxial cable. Remote Antenna Unit (RAU) In the Downlink direction, the RAU receives the optic signal from the CDU and converts it to rf. At this stage a Low Pass filter sends the pilot tone to a Pilot Detection Circuit, The intended transmit signal is sent through a two-stage amplifier/filter circuit. The resulting signal is fed through a passive duplexer and finally sent to an external antenna via coaxial cable. The external antenna gain is typically 12 dB maximum. In the Uplink direction, the RAU receives an rf signal from the mobile via the external antenna. The rf signal is processed through a filter/gain control circuit through to a rf-to-optic conversion circuit. The optic signal is the sent to the CDU via fiber optic cable.

The system operates with a direct connection in the uplink direction. The system is made up of two components: 1) CDU (Central Distribution Unit) - This unit is typically located in a wiring closet. Each CDU can interface to six RAU (Remote Antenna Units). The CDU collects and distributes voice and data signals through fiber cable pairs. The CDU connects to the output of a repeater unit. The Uplink direction is a directly wired connection and cannot connect directly to an antenna. The transmit signals from the repeater are converted from rf to optical and distributed via the fiber cables to a RAU. 2) RAU (Remote Antenna Unit) - This unit converts the signal received from the CDU back to rf and transmits the rf to subscriber units within its coverage range. Conversely it receives the rf signals transmitted by the subscriber units, converts the rf to an optical signal and sends it t…
