3E06803E0680 SmartReader BR Series Page 12 Using the SmartReader Configuring the Electronic Controller for use EachtimeyouwanttousetheSmartReaderyouneedtodetermine how you are going to use it. This determines: •what device to connect to the Electronic Controller and •what operating mode to set on the Electronic Controller. Setting up the Electronic Controller For further details on the options described, seeElectronic Controller Connectors(p 9). 1. Are you connecting the Electronic Controller to an external device (Scale or Computer)? •If yes, go to step 2. •If no, no set up is required. 2. Connect the Electronic Controller to an external device. a. Ensure the Electronic Controller is turnedoff. b. Plug the supplied serial cable into the serial port on the Electronic Controller. c. Plug the other end into the device and set it up to receive the data. Note: •If your computer does not have a serial port, use the supplied DB9 to USB adaptor to connect to a USB port on the computer. •If connecting to a Gallagher or Ruddweigh Scale, connect the serial cable into COM Port 2 on the Scale and set the port toEID Allflexin the Communications menu. Do you want to save the Electronic ID tag number to the internal memory? •If yes, turn the dial toMemory. Gotonextstep. Note:Data is stored in the internal memory and isalso sent outvia the COM port in this mode. •If no, turn the dial toOn. Gotonextstep. Note:Data is sent out via the COM port but isnot storedin the internal memory in this mode. 2. Doyouwanttoresetthecounter to zero on the Electronic Controller? •If yes, press theReset Counterbutton. Go to next step. •If no, go to next step. 3. Doyouwanttoaddthenewtagreadstotheexistingsession? •If yes, end of procedure. •If no, press theNew Sessionbutton. Note:A new session is always created when the Scale is turned off then on. Scanning Electronic ID tags 1. Begin scanning Electronic ID tags. 2. Do you want to add the new tag reads to a new session? •If yes, press theNew Sessionbutton. Go to step 3. For further details, seeButtons(p 5). •If no, go to step 3. 3. Continue until you have read all Electronic ID tags. 3E06803E0680 SmartReader BR Series Page 14 Finishing a scanning session 1. Turn off the Electronic Controller. 2. If you had external devices connected to the Electronic Controller disconnect them. 3. On the Electronic Controller, unscrew the Amphenol connector locking nut and disconnect the antenna cable from the Electronic Controller. 4. On the Electronic Controller, replace the cap onto the Amphenol socket and tighten to protect from debris. 5. Grasp the Electronic Controller on both sides and lift up until it clears the mounting bracket. 6. Screw the Amphenol connector on the antenna cable into the Amphenol socket on the Antenna Panel and tighten the locking nut. Note:This helps keep the Amphenol connector free of dust and debris. For information on downloading data from the Electronic Controller into MyScale Pro seeMyScale Pro(p 42). 3E0680 SmartReader BR Series3E0680 Page 15 Power options in BR Series SmartReader Charging internal batteries Note:The SmartReaderwill not operatewith the battery charger connected. To charge the internal batteries in the Electronic Controller, complete the following steps: 1. Check the input voltage on the battery charger is correctly set (110 or 230 V AC). 2. Plug the battery charger into power socket and turn on. 3. Connect the battery charger in the Electronic Controller. 4. On the battery charger, switch the unit on. 5. Check the LED on the battery charger to ensure Electronic Controller is being charged: Notes: •The battery charge time isapproximately 6 hours. •Once the battery is full charged the battery charger stops charging. •The bargraph indicates the charge level by the number of static bars. See Bargraph (p 7). 3E06803E0680 SmartReader BR Series Page 16 Connecting to an external 12 volt battery To connect the Electronic Controller to an external 12 volt battery, complete the following steps: 1. Connect the supplied black and red battery lead to the Electronic Controller. 2. Connect the alligator clips to the 12 volt battery. Connect theRedclip to thePositiveterminal Connect theBlackclip to theNegativeterminal. Notes: •The bargraph displays the level of charge in the •external 12 volt battery, or •internal battery whichever is the greater. •The internal batteries are not charged. 3E0680 SmartReader BR Series3E0680 Page 17 Low voltage shutdown When the battery charge (for the battery providing power to the Electronic Controller) drops to below one bar the low battery beep sounds (four beeps) to indicate the battery has low voltage. This will continue regularly until the battery level becomes critical or until you charge the battery. This applies for both the internal and external (if connected) batteries. When the battery charge (for the battery providing power to the Electronic Controller) drops to a critical level, the Electronic Controller shuts down. During the shut down process the low battery beep sounds (four beeps) and the display showsBATT. The critical level occurs when the battery voltage drops below 11.5 volts. Replace the external battery or recharge the internal batteries. For further information on connecting an external 12 voltbattery, see Connecting to an external 12volt battery (p 16). Note:This warning sounds regardless of the volume level setting. High voltage shutdown If the power source to the Electronic Controller provides a voltage greater than 16 V, the Electronic Controller automatically shuts down to protect the electronics. The display showsVOLTwhile shutting down. 3E06803E0680 SmartReader BR Series Page 42 MyScale Pro Introduction The MyScale Pro software enables you to transfer Electronic ID tag numbers stored in the SmartReader memory from the Electronic Controller to a computer. Note:The Electronic Controller does not need to be connected to the panel for this activity. With MyScale Pro you can perform the following functions; •Copy sessions from the Electronic Controller. •Change session file names. •View and Edit sessions. •Print sessions. •Create long term record storage using MyScale Pro to backup information from the Electronic Controller. 3E0680 SmartReader BR Series3E0680 Page 43 Installation Operating systems You can run MyScale Pro on eitherof the following operating systems: •Windows XP •Windows 2000 Installation procedure Ensureyou install the most recent version of MyScale Pro each time you purchase new hardware. Before installing the MyScale Pro software, make sure that you close all open applications on your computer. Note: The MyScale Pro software only needs to be installed once. If you are installing over a previous version, seeInstalling over a previous version(p 46). 1. Insert the MyScale Pro software CD into the CD Drive on your computer. The installation process starts automatically and theWelcome screen displays. Ifyouhaveanexistingversioninstalled,youarepromptedto remove it. See Installing over(p 46) a previous version. 2. ClickNext. TheSelect Countryscreen displays. 3E06803E0680 SmartReader BR Series Page 44 3. Check the box next to your country. If your country is not displayed, selectOther. This option sets some of the terminology used, as well as the weight units. In the USA and Canada options, the default weight unit is pounds. In all other countries, the default weight unit is kilograms. The weight unit selection can be changed after installation. 4. ClickNext. TheLicense Agreementscreen displays. 5. ClickYesto accept the License Agreement. TheChoose Destination Locationscreen displays. 6. Do you want to change theDestination Folder? •If yes, clickBrowseand select a new folder. •If no, go to next step. TheDestination Folderis the folder in to which the MyScale Pro program files install. 7. ClickNext. TheSelect Hardwarescreen displays. 8. Check the box next to the hardware you have. TheSetup Statusscreen displays while the program files are installed on your computer. If this computer does not have the specificUSB to Serial Driver required for the supplied USB to Serial cable a screen displays. 10. ClickNextto install the requiredUSB to Serial Driver. The driver files are installed on you computer. 11. ClickFinishto continue with the MyScale Pro installation. 12. Do you want a MyScale Pro icon on your desktop? •If yes, check the box on theInstallShield Wizard Completescreen. •If no, go to next step. 3E06803E0680 SmartReader BR Series Page 46 Installing over a previous version Ensureyou install the most recent version of MyScale Pro each time you purchase new hardware. The InstallShield Wizard detects if you already have a version of MyScale Pro installed on your computer. It asks if you want to remove the existing version prior to installing the new version (recommended). Once the existing version is removed you need to run the InstallShield Wizard again to install the new version of MyScale Pro, see Installation procedure(p 43). Note:Updating this version of MyScale Pro will retain the data previously recorded and still enable full access to view and edit. To manually start the installation, complete the following steps: •SelectRunfrom the WindowsStartmenu. •Typed:\setup(wheredis your CD Drive) •ClickOK. Connecting the Electronic Controller to the computer In order to view or alter settings on the Electronic Controller, you need to establish a connection between the Electronic Controller and the computer. To connect the Electronic Controller to a computer, complete the following steps: 1. Plug the supplied COM cable (RS232 to RS232) into the RS232 port on the Electronic Controller. 2. Plug the other end into the serial port on your computer. Note:If your computer does not have a serial port, use the supplied RS232 to USB adaptor to connect to a USB port on the computer. 3E0680 SmartReader BR Series3E0680 Page 47 Basic Terminology There are terms and abbreviations used throughout this manual that relate exclusively to MyScale Pro and the use of SmartReader products. The following terms will become familiar as you work through the process: Electronic ID The Electronic ID is the electronic code in an ear tag that can be scanned to recognise an individual animal. RecordA record is a piece of data relating to an animal. 3E06803E0680 SmartReader BR Series Page 48 Starting MyScale Pro To Start MyScale Pro: •Double-click the MyScale Pro icon on the desktop. Alternatively... You can start MyScale Pro from the Windows Start menu. 1. Click on the WindowsStartbutton. 2. SelectAll Programs(Windows XP) orPrograms(Windows 2000). 3. SelectMyScale. 4. Click on . Closing MyScale Pro To close the MyScale Pro: 1. Clickonthe button or on theat the top right of the window. Note:It is recommended that you close MyScale Pro when it is not in use, as it uses a serial port on your computer that will no longer be available to other applications such as email programs or internet browsers. 3E0680 SmartReader BR Series3E0680 Page 49 MyScale Pro main menu The list of hardware selected during installation determines what menu options display on the MyScale Pro Main menu. If other hardware is connected to MyScale Pro, the associated menu options are also added to the Main menu. All added menu options remain on the Main menu once added, however MyScale Pro checks each time to determine if the selected option is applicable to the connected hardware. The full data (as defined by the ISO 11784 standard) is saved to internal memory (BR Series only). MyScale Pro transfers all captured Electronic ID tag information to the connected computer when the session is transferred. Both animal and non-animal tags can be processed as defined in the ISO standard. Field delimiter This option sets the field delimiter of the sent data. Used in conjunction with theID Codefield. Number format This option sets the number format the captured data is sent out the COM port, either Decimal or Hexadecimal. Reserved field This option determines whether theReserved fielddata is included in the sent data. Unused in the current standard. Data block flag This option determines whether theData block flagis included in the sent data. 3E0680 SmartReader BR Series3E0680 Page 67 Application code This option determines whether theApplication codeis included in the sent data. Applies to non animal Electronic ID tags only. Command Prompt This option determines whether a Command prompt (>) is sent after to sending the data. ID Code This option sets whether the data is sent out as formated or un- formated data. IftheIDCodeissentoutasFormattedthe character defined in the Field delimitedoption is inserted between the blocks of data. Leading zeros This option determines whether theLeading zerosare included in the sent data. Country code This option determines whether theCountry codeis included in the sent data and if so, what format is used. Applies to animal Electronic ID tags only. Numeric - a three digit numeric country code is included in the data string sent out. ISO (alphnum) - a three digit alphanumeric country code is included in the data string sent out. Initial character This option determines the initial character of the data. Used in conjunction with theTag Type IDfield. Tag type ID This option determines the Tag type ID used to identify the beginning of the data. Used in conjunction with theInitial characterfield. 3E06803E0680 SmartReader BR Series Page 68 Panel Settings Output Power This screen enables you to control the output power level of the connected Antenna Panel. The higher the power setting, the more current is drawn from the batteries. Note:You must use the highest power setting if you are reading FDX tags. If you have multiple Electronic Controller installed on the siteAND are only reading HDX tags you mayreduce the power setting. This will minimise the interference between Electronic Controller and extend the battery life. 3E0680 SmartReader BR Series3E0680 Page 69 Communication Settings This screen sets up the connection between a Electronic Controller and a computer (datalogger, Scale etc) via RS232 or Bluetooth. Once altered, these settings are saved to the PC only. To transfer the alterations to the Electronic Controller you must click . Note:Changing these settings, from the defaults,will causethe communication between the Electronic Controller and MyScale Pro to fail. Baud rate This option sets theBaud rateof the connection. The default is 9600 bps. Data bits Fixed. Flow control This option sets theFlow controlof the connection. The default is None. Parity This option sets theParityof the connection. The default is No parity. Stop bits This option sets theStop bitsof the connection. The default is 1. 3E06803E0680 SmartReader BR Series Page 70 Diagnostics This screen enables you to: •view statistics on the functionality of the Electronic Controller and Antenna Panel, and •run the diagnostics wizard. Start Stats To display statistics, click. Stop Stats To stop the display of statistics, click. Clear Stats To clear the displayed statistics from the screen, click. Input Displays the input supply and battery levels, in volts, for the connected Electronic Controller. The inputsupplyindicates the external charger level. The inputbatteryfigure indicates the current internal battery level (BR Series only). 3E0680 SmartReader BR Series3E0680 Page 71 HDX (Half Duplex) Displays the percentage of good and bad HDX tag reads since statistics display started. Tuning This displays the tuning level and setting for the connected Electronic Controller. The tuning level indicates how well the Antenna Panel is tuned. The higher the number the better. The tuning setting indicates which of the tune settings is currently used by the Electronic Controller. There are 32 possible settings (0 to 31). If the value is close to either 0 to 31 then there is a risk of not being able to achieve the optimal tune for the Antenna Panel. FDX (Full Duplex) Displays the percentage of good and bad FDX tag reads since statistics display started. Noise level This display the background noise level. Turn off the Antenna Panel prior to reading this value so you can get a reading of the background noise in the area of the Antenna Panel. Turn off the Antenna Panel by changing the read mode to Requested. See Operational Settings (p 61).
