2130336 Rev D AirCard ® 755 Wireless Network Card Installation Guide Preface Rev D Dec.031 Important NoticeBecause of the nature of wireless communications, trans- mission and reception of data can never be guaranteed. Data may be delayed, corrupted (i.e., have errors) or be totally lost. Although significant delays or losses of data are rare when wireless devices such as the Sierra Wireless network card are used in a normal manner with a well-constructed network, the Sierra Wireless network card should not be used in situations where failure to transmit or receive data could result in damage of any kind to the user or any other party, including but not limited to personal injury, death, or loss of property. Sierra Wireless, Inc. and its affiliates accept no responsibility for damages of any kind resulting from delays or errors in data transmitted or received using the Sierra Wireless network card, or for failure of the Sierra Wireless network card to transmit or receive such data. Safety and HazardsDo not operate the Sierra Wireless AirCard ® wireless network card in areas where blasting is in progress, where explosive atmospheres may be present, near medical equipment, life support equipment, or any equipment which may be suscep- tible to any form of radio interference. In such areas, the Sierra Wireless network card MUST BE POWERED OFF. The Sierra Wireless network card can transmit signals that could interfere with this equipment. Do not operate the Sierra Wireless network card in any aircraft, whether the aircraft is on the ground or in flight. In aircraft, the Sierra Wireless network card MUST BE POWERED OFF. When operating, the Sierra Wireless network card can transmit signals that could interfere with various onboard systems. Note: Some airlines may permit the use of cellular phones while the aircraft is on the ground and the door is open. Sierra Wireless network cards may be used at this time. The driver or operator of any vehicle should not operate the Sierra Wireless network card while in control of a vehicle. Doing so will detract from the driver or operator's control and operation of that vehicle. In some states and provinces, operating such communications devices while in control of a vehicle is an offence. FCC RF Exposure Information In August 1996 the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) of the United States with its action in Report and Order FCC 96-326 adopted an updated safety standard for human exposure to radio frequency (RF) electromagnetic energy AirCard 755 Installation Guide 22130336 emitted by FCC regulated transmitters. Those guidelines are consistent with the safety standard previously set by both U.S. and international standards bodies. The design of this wireless network card complies with the FCC guidelines and these international standards. Use only the supplied or an approved antenna. Unauthorized antennas, modifications, or attachments could impair call quality, damage the phone, or result in violation of FCC regulations. To comply with FCC RF exposure requirements (US) the AirCard 755 GSM/GPRS modem card must be operated with a minimum separation distance of 2.5 cm (1 inch) between the user/nearby persons and the antenna. Always place the antenna in the upright position (oriented vertically) when using the AirCard 755 in a laptop computer. For more information about RF exposure, please visit the FCC web site at www.fcc.gov . Evaluation of RF Exposure for AirCard 755 Wireless Modem as a Mobile Device In this application we seek modular approval to the AirCard 755 wireless modem for use in mobile configuration. Based on the FCC OET Bulletin 65 Supplement C and 47 CFR §2.1091, we have concluded that the AirCard 755 will comply with the FCC rules on RF exposure for mobile devices if the antenna gain does not exceed 4.5 dBi in both cellular band and PCS band. The following analysis will demonstrate such compliance. Since the AirCard 755 modem is a dual band device, the analysis will be done in both bands. Operation in cellular band (824 – 849 MHz) The peak conducted output power of AirCard 755 in cellular band is 31.5 dBm. Take the worst case as an example, in which an antenna with 4.5 dBi gain is used. The resulted power density at a distance of 20 cm can be deducted as follows: EIRP = 31.5 + 4.5 = 36 dBm = 3981 mW Power Density = EIRP*DutyCycle/(4πR 2 ) = 3981*0.5/(4*π*20 2 ) = 0.40 mW/cm 2 where DutyCycle is 0.5 for GPRS operation (the worst case) and R is 20 cm. The MPE limit for General Population/Uncontrolled Exposure is shown in the FCC OET Bulletin 65 Supplement C and can be calculated as follows: MPE limit = 824/1500 = 0.55 mW/cm 2 As we can see the resulted power density is below the MPE limit, therefore AirCard 755 in cellular band is compliant with the FCC rules on RF exposure. Operation in PCS band (1850 – 1910 MHz) The peak conducted output power of AirCard 755 in PCS band is 28.5 dBm. Take the worst case as an example, in which an antenna with 4.5 dBi gain is used. The resulted ERP can be expressed as follows: ERP = 28.5 + 4.5 –2.15 = 30.49 dBm (1.12 W) < 3 W The FCC OET Bulletin 65 Supplement C states that mobile devices identified in 47 CFR §2.1091 that operate at frequencies above 1.5 GHz with an ERP of 3.0 watts or more are required to perform routine environmental evaluation for RF exposure prior to equipment authorization or use; otherwise, they are categorically excluded. As we can see this resulted ERP is below 3 W, therefore routine environmental evaluation for RF exposure prior to equipment authorization or use for AirCard 755 in PCS band is categorically excluded.
