Company: Sierra Wireless, Inc. FCC ID: N7NAC775 Request for transmitter modular approval Transmitter Module Characteristics Item Requirements EUT 1 Have its own RF shielding Device is equipped with Metal shielding to cover RF section. Refer to external photos 2 Have buffered modulation/data inputs (if such inputs are provided), All inputs to the modules are buffered through logic or microprocessor inputs. 3 Have it own power supply regulation Internal 3V power regulator. Refer to schematics 4 Meet the antenna requirements of Section 15.203 Not applicable 5 Be tested in a stand-alone configuration, i.e., the antenna, AC or DC power and data input/output lines must be connected to the module but, the module must not be inside another case during testing Device was tested inside a laptop. 6 Be labeled with its own FCC ID number, and if the FCC ID is not visible when the module is installed inside another device, then the outside of the device into which the module is installed must also display a label referring to the enclosed module. Refer to page 60 of user manual 7 The modular transmitter is manufactured so that the user cannot influence the operation of the transmitter that will operate outside of the scope of the regulations. The module is in the form of a PCMCIA card. No adjustment can be made by the user. 8 Address compliance with the Commission's RF exposure limits in Sections 1.1310 and 2.1093. In addition, spread spectrum transmitters operating under Section 15.247 are required to address RF exposure compliance in accordance with Section 15.247(b)(4). Refer to RF Exposure_AC775.pdf

Evaluation of RF Exposure for AirCard 775 Wireless Modem as a Mobile Device In this application we also seek modular approval to the AirCard 775 wireless modem for use in mobile configuration. Based on the FCC OET Bulletin 65 Supplement C and 47 CFR §2.1091, we have concluded that the AirCard 775 will comply with the FCC rules on RF exposure for mobile devices if the antenna gain does not exceed 4.5 dBi in both cellular band and PCS band. The following analysis will demonstrate such compliance. Since the AirCard 775 modem is a dual band device, the analysis will be done in both bands. Operation in cellular band (824 – 849 MHz) The peak conducted output power of AirCard 775 in cellular band is 31.5 dBm. Take the worst case as an example, in which an antenna with 4.5 dBi gain is used. The resulted power density at a distance of 20 cm can be deducted as follows: EIRP = 31.5 + 4.5 = 36 dBm = 3981 mW Power Density = EIRP*DutyCycle/(4πR 2 ) = 3981*0.5/(4*π*20 2 ) = 0.40 mW/cm 2 where DutyCycle is 0.5 for GPRS operation (the worst case) and R is 20 cm. The MPE limit for General Population/Uncontrolled Exposure is shown in the FCC OET Bulletin 65 Supplement C and can be calculated as follows: MPE limit = 824/1500 = 0.55 mW/cm 2 As we can see the resulted power density is below the MPE limit, therefore AirCard 775 in cellular band is compliant with the FCC rules on RF exposure. Operation in PCS band (1850 – 1910 MHz) The peak conducted output power of AirCard 775 in PCS band is 28.5 dBm. Take the worst case as an example, in which an antenna with 4.5 dBi gain is used. The resulted ERP can be expressed as follows: ERP = 28.5 + 4.5 –2.15 = 30.49 dBm (1.12 W) < 3 W The FCC OET Bulletin 65 Supplement C states that mobile devices identified in 47 CFR §2.1091 that operate at frequencies above 1.5 GHz with an ERP of 3.0 watts or more are required to perform routine environmental evaluation for RF exposure prior to equipment authorization or use; otherwise, they are categorically excluded. As we can see this resulted ERP is below 3 W, therefore routine environmental evaluation for RF exposure prior to equipment authorization or use for AirCard 775 in PCS band is categorically excluded.

EQUIPMENT UNDER TEST (EUT) DESCRIPTION The Sierra Wireless Inc. model AirCard 775 is a quad-band PCMCIA card wireless modem operating on the GSM/GPRS/EDGE network. In the US and Canada, only cellular and PCS bands are used for GSM/GPRS operation, so this test report only contains data for these two bands (850MHz and 1900MHz). 2. REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPLIANCE TESTING DEFINED BY THE FCC The US Federal Communications Commission has released the report and order “Guidelines for Evaluating the Environmental Effects of RF Radiation", ET Docket No. 93-62 in August 1996 [1]. The order requires routine SAR evaluation prior to equipment authorization of portable transmitter devices, including portable telephones. For consumer products, the applicable limit is 1.6 mW/g for an uncontrolled environment and 8.0 mW/g for an occupational/controlled environment as recommended by the ANSI/IEEE standa…

Output power listed is conducted. Limited Modular Approval. The antenna(s) used for this transmitter must not be co-located or operating in conjunction with any other antenna or transmitter within a host device. End-users must be provided with specific information required to satisfy RF exposure compliance for final host devices and installations. For use as a module in mobile-only exposure conditions, antenna gain including cable loss must not exceed 4.5 dBi , for purposes of 2.1043 and 2.1091. The antenna(s) used for this transmitter must be installed to provide a separation distance of at least 20 cm from all persons. Device has been tested with specific detachable antenna in the notebook computer as documented in this filing. The radiated power tested is : Part 22 ERP 1.479 W, Part 24 EIRP 1.584 W. Device has been tested for SAR compliance in three notebook computers with side PCMCIA slots as described in this filings, and can be used in notebook computers with substantially similar physical dimensions, construction, and electrical and RF characteristics. Compliance of this device in all final host configurations is the responsibility of the Grantee. SAR compliance was evaluated for the specific detachable antenna shown in this filing. The maximum reported SAR values is: Part 22:body 1.19 W/kg; Part 24:body 0.167 W/kg with GPRS mode 50% duty factor. This device contains 900 MHz GSM and 1800 MHz DCS function are not operational in U.S. Territories. This filing is only applicable for 850 MHz/1900 MHz PCS operations.
