Data may be delayed, corrupted (i.e., have errors) or be totally lost. Although significant delays or losses of data are rare when wireless devices such as the Sierra Wireless modem are used in a normal manner with a well‐constructed network, the Sierra Wireless modem should not be used in situations where failure to transmit or receive data could result in damage of any kind to the user or any other party, including but not limited to personal injury, death, or loss of property. Sierra Wireless accepts no responsibility for damages of any kind resulting from delays or errors in data transmitted or received using the Sierra Wireless modem, or for failure of the Sierra Wireless modem to transmit or receive such data. Safety and HazardsDo not operate the Sierra Wireless modem in areas where blasting is in progress, where explosive atmospheres may be present, near medical equipment, near life support equipment, or any equipment which may be susceptible to any form of radio interference. In such areas, the Sierra Wireless modem MUST BE POWERED OFF . The Sierra Wireless modem can transmit signals that could interfere with this equipment. When operating, the Sierra Wireless modem can transmit signals that could interfere with various onboard systems. Note: Some airlines may permit the use of cellular phones while the aircraft is on the ground and the door is open. Sierra Wireless modems may be used at this time. The driver or operator of any vehicle should not operate the Sierra Wireless modem while in control of a vehicle. Doing so will detract from the driver or operatorʹs control and operation of that vehicle. In some states and provinces, operating such communications devices while in control of a vehicle is an offence. The only thing missing at this point is the user manual. I will forward it as soon as it is received from Ying. Question #1: Based upon SAR test report, GPRS/EGPRS with 4 time slots did not measure. Please provide and document your engineering justification in the SAR test report to test only sub-set of radio capabilities. <CCS Answer:> We chose 2 slots for Cell band because the following reasons: 1. The highest power and higher duty cycle. 2. Based on past experience with Sierra Wireless products, the 2 slots configurations consistently produced the highest SAR values for Cell Band. Please see data below for conducted output power. Question #2: Based upon the technical specificaiton in the user manual, this device is designed per Release 5 without HSUPA capabilities. However, per the theory of operaiton, the max. data rate supported in HSDPA mode is 7.2 Mbps downlink but the user manual indicates the highest data rate is 3.6 Mbps (page 10). Please confirm the data rate supported duirng HSDPA mode of operation. <CCS Answer:> The max. downlink data rate supported in HSDPA mode is 7.2 Mbps. The user manual is being revised and will be sent to you shortly. Question #3: What is UE category that this device capable of? <CCS Answer:> AirCard 880 supports HSDPA category 8. Question #4: This device is also classified as PC peripheral. FCC Label does not have FCC DoC logo to comply with FCC DoC procedures. Evaluation of RF Exposure for AirCard 880U Wireless Modem as a Mobile Device In this application we seek modular approval to the AIRCARD 880U wireless modem for use in mobile configuration. Based on the FCC OET Bulletin 65 Supplement C and 47 CFR §2.1091, we have concluded that the AIRCARD 880E will comply with the FCC rules on RF exposure for mobile devices if the antenna gain does not exceed 5 dBi in cellular band and 4 dBi in PCS band. The following analysis will demonstrate such compliance. The analysis will be done in two US bands. Operation in cellular band (824 – 849 MHz) The peak conducted output power of AIRCARD 880E in cellular band is 32 dBm. Take the worst case as an example, in which an antenna with 5 dBi gain is used. The resulted power density at a distance of 20 cm can be deducted as follows: EIRP = 32 + 5 = 37 dBm = 5012 mW Power Density = EIRP*DutyCycle/(4πR 2 ) = 5012*0.5/(4*π*20 2 ) = 0.50 mW/cm 2 where DutyCycle is 0.5 for GPRS operation (the worst case) and R is 20 cm. The MPE limit for General Population/Uncontrolled Exposure is shown in the FCC OET Bulletin 65 Supplement C and can be calculated as follows: MPE limit = 824/1500 = 0.55 mW/cm 2 As we can see the resulted power density is below the MPE limit, therefore AIRCARD 880U in cellular band is compliant with the FCC rules on RF exposure. Operation in PCS band (1850 – 1910 MHz) The peak conducted output power of AIRCARD 880U in PCS band is 29 dBm. Take the worst case as an example, in which an antenna with 4 dBi gain is used. The resulted ERP can be expressed as follows: ERP = 29 + 4 –2.15 = 30.85 dBm (1.22 W) < 3 W The FCC OET Bulletin 65 Supplement C states that mobile devices identified in 47 CFR §2.1091 that operate at frequencies above 1.5 GHz with an ERP of 3.0 watts or more are required to perform routine environmental evaluation for RF exposure prior to equipment authorization or use; otherwise, they are categorically excluded. As we can see this resulted ERP is below 3 W, therefore routine environmental evaluation for RF exposure prior to equipment authorization or use for AIRCARD 880U in PCS band is categorically excluded.
