Data may be delayed, corrupted (i.e., have errors) or be totally lost. Although significant delays or losses of data are rare when wireless devices such as the Sierra Wireless modem are used in a normal manner with a well-constructed network, the Sierra Wireless modem should not be used in situations where failure to transmit or receive data could result in damage of any kind to the user or any other party, including but not limited to personal injury, death, or loss of property. The driver or operator of any vehicle should not operate the Sierra Wireless modem while in control of a vehicle. Doing so will detract from the driver or operator’s control and operation of that vehicle. In some states and provinces, operating such communications devices while in control of a vehicle is an offence. Limitations of Liability This manual is provided “as is”. Evaluation of RF Exposure for Q2698 Wireless Modem as a Mobile Device In this application we seek modular approval to the Q2698 wireless modem for use in mobile configuration. Part I: FCC requirement Based on the FCC OET Bulletin 65 Supplement C and 47 CFR §2.1091, we have concluded that the Q2698 will comply with the FCC rules on RF exposure for mobile devices if the antenna gain does not exceed 7.5 dBi in cellular band and 3.5 dBi in PCS band. The following analysis will demonstrate such compliance. The analysis will be done in two US bands. Operation in cellular band (824 – 849 MHz) The peak conducted output power of Q2698 in Cellular band is 32.65 dBm. Take the worst case as an example, in which an antenna with 7.5 dBi gain is used. Operation in PCS band (1850 – 1910 MHz) The peak conducted output power of Q2698 in PCS band is 29.4 dBm. Take the worst case as an example, in which an antenna with 3.5 dBi gain is used. The resulted ERP can be expressed as follows: ERP = 29.4 + 3.5 –2.15 = 30.75 dBm (1.19 W) < 3 W The FCC OET Bulletin 65 Supplement C states that mobile devices identified in 47 CFR §2.1091 that operate at frequencies above 1.5 GHz with an ERP of 3.0 watts or more are required to perform routine environmental evaluation for RF exposure prior to equipment authorization or use; otherwise, they are categorically excluded. As we can see this resulted ERP is below 3 W, therefore routine environmental evaluation for RF exposure prior to equipment authorization or use for Q2698 in PCS band is categorically excluded. Part II: IC requirement Power Density= 0.515m W/cm 2 =5.15W/ m 2 (Worse case) When operate in cellular band (824 – 849 MHz) if the device antenna gain does not exceed 7.5 dBi in cellular band. Power Density= 0.095m W/cm 2 =0.95W/ m 2 (Worse case) When operate in PCS band (1850 – 1910 MHz) if the device antenna gain does not exceed 3.5 dBi in PCS band. The contents of this page are subject to the confidentiality information on page one. 6 Out of Band Emissions at Antenna Terminals FCC 22.901(d), 22.917, 24.238(a) Out of Band Emissions: The mean power of emissions must be attenuated below the mean power of the unmodulated carrier (P) on any frequency outside the frequency band by at least (43 + 10 log P) dB. The out of band emission limit translates to a worst case absolute limit of -13dBm in this case. 6.1 Test Procedure The RF output of the transmitter was connected to a spectrum analyzer through a calibrated coaxial cable. Sufficient scans were taken to show the out-of-band emissions, if any, up to 10 th harmonic. The EUT was scanned for spurious emissions from 1MHz to 20GHz with sufficient bandwidth and video resolution. Data plots are included.
