Data may be delayed, corrupted (i.e., have errors) or be totally lost. Although significant delays or losses of data are rare when wireless devices such as the Sierra Wireless modem are used in a normal manner with a well-constructed network, the Sierra Wireless modem should not be used in situations where failure to transmit or receive data could result in damage of any kind to the user or any other party, including but not limited to personal injury, death, or loss of property. Sierra Wireless accepts no responsibility for damages of any kind resulting from delays or errors in data transmitted or received using the Sierra Wireless modem, or for failure of the Sierra Wireless modem to transmit or receive such data. Safety and Hazards Do not operate the Sierra Wireless modem in areas where blasting is in progress, where explosive atmospheres may be present, near medical equipment, near life support equipment, or any equipment which may be susceptible to any form of radio interference. In such areas, the Sierra Wireless modem MUST BE POWERED OFF. The Sierra Wireless modem can transmit signals that could interfere with this equipment. Do not operate the Sierra Wireless modem in any aircraft, whether the aircraft is on the ground or in flight. In aircraft, the Sierra Wireless modem MUST BE POWERED OFF. When operating, the Sierra Wireless modem can transmit signals that could interfere with various onboard systems. Note: Some airlines may permit the use of cellular phones while the aircraft is on the ground and the door is open. Sierra Wireless modems may be used at this time. The driver or operator of any vehicle should not operate the Sierra Wireless modem while in control of a vehicle. Doing so will detract from the driver or operator’s control and operation of that vehicle. In some states and provinces, operating such communications devices while in control of a vehicle is an offence. Limitations of Liability This manual is provided “as is”. SIERRA WIRELESS Evaluation of RF Exposure for AirPrime® SL8090 as a Mobile Device In this application we seek modular approval to the AirPrime® SL8090 for use in mobile configuration. Based on the FCC OET Bulletin 65 Supplement C and 47 CFR §2.1091, we have concluded that the AirPrime® SL8090 will comply with the FCC rules on RF exposure for mobile devices if the antenna gain does not exceed 6.2 dBi in cellular band and 3.8 dBi in PCS band. The following analysis will demonstrate such compliance. The analysis will be done in two US bands. Operation in cellular band (824 – 849 MHz) The peak conducted output power of AirPrime® SL8090 in Cellular band is 32.2 dBm. Take the worst case as an example, in which an antenna with 6.2 dBi gain is used. The resulted power density at a distance of 20 cm can be deducted as follows: ERP = 32.2 + 6.2 = 38.4 dBm = 6918 mW Power Density = EIRP*DutyCycle/(4πR 2 ) = 6918 *0.25/(4*π*20 2 ) = 0.34 mW/cm 2 where DutyCycle is 0.25 for GPRS operation in Class 10 (the worst case) and R is 20 cm. The MPE limit for General Population/Uncontrolled Exposure is shown in the FCC OET Bulletin 65 Supplement C and can be calculated as follows: MPE limit = 824/1500 = 0.55 mW/cm 2 As we can see the resulted power density is below the MPE limit, therefore AirPrime® SL8090 in Cellular band is compliant with the FCC rules on RF exposure. Operation in PCS band (1850 – 1910 MHz) The peak conducted output power of AirPrime® SL8090 in PCS band is 29.2 dBm. Take the worst case as an example, in which an antenna with 4 dBi gain is used. The resulted ERP can be expressed as follows: ERP = 29.2 + 3.8 –2.15 = 30.85 dBm (1.22 W) < 3 W The FCC OET Bulletin 65 Supplement C states that mobile devices identified in 47 CFR §2.1091 that operate at frequencies above 1.5 GHz with an ERP of 3.0 watts or more are required to perform routine environmental evaluation for RF exposure prior to equipment authorization or use; otherwise, they are categorically excluded. As we can see this resulted ERP is below 3 W, therefore routine environmental evaluation for RF exposure prior to equipment authorization or use for AirPrime® SL8090 in PCS band is categorically excluded.
