No Wires Needed Page 10 of 44Swallow 1100 PC CardUser manual 3 Wireless LAN basics Wireless LAN (Local Area Networks) systems offer a great number of advantages over a traditional, wired system. Wireless LANs are more flexible, easier to setup and manage and often more cost effective than their wired equivalence. Using radio frequency (RF) technology, WLANs transmit and receive data over the air, minimizing the need for wired connections. Thus, WLANs combine data connectivity with user mobility, and, through simplified configuration, enable movable LANs. With wireless LANs, users can access shared information without looking for a place to plug in and network managers can set up or augment networks without installing or moving wires. Wireless LANs offer the following productivity, convenience and cost advantages over traditional wired networks: • Mobility - Wireless LAN systems can provide LAN users with access to real-time information anywhere in their organization. This mobility supports productivity and service opportunities not possible with wired networks. • Installation Speed and Simplicity - Installing a wireless LAN system can be fast and easy and can eliminate the need to pull cable through walls and ceilings. No Wires Needed User manualSwallow 1100 PC CardPage 11 of 44 • Installation Flexibility - Wireless technology allows the network to go where wires cannot go. • Reduced Cost-of-Ownership - While the initial investment required for wireless LAN hardware might be higher than the cost of wired LAN hardware, overall installation expenses and life- cycle costs will be significantly lower. Long-term cost benefits are greatest in dynamic environments requiring frequent moves, adds, and changes. • Scalability - Wireless LAN systems can be configured in a variety of topologies to meet the needs of specific applications and installations. Configurations are easily changed and range from peer-to-peer n…

July 14, 1999 Professional installation of No Wires Needed 1100 series products to meet FCC 15.203 requirements. Product /Model connector description The No Wires Needed (NWN) 1100 products are in two hardware forms. One is the PC card, which is a PCMCIA type II card (OGD10330209). It has an integrated antenna and an external antenna connector utilizing a unique MMX connector. This unique coupling meets the FCC 15.203 requirements and therefore does not need professional installation. The second hardware form is used for the indoor access point and station adapter, and the outdoor wireless bridges (OGD10310308). This device uses a custom made SMA type connector which meets the FCC 15.203 requirements for unique coupling. The antennas used for the indoor models use this special connector. The antennas used for the outdoor models include a special; SMA to standard N type adapter cable. These antenna kits are not available to the general public. The users guide for the product explicitly states that professional installation is required for these antennas and that only the antenna certified with the products can be used. The statement below is provided in the user guide for all the NWN 1100 products, except for the PCMCIA adapter. Professional Installer Statement from the users guide, section 2 “Warning: It is the responsibility of the professional installer to ensure that when using the outdoor antenna kits in the United States (or where FCC rules apply), only these antennas shown in the table above are used. The use of any antenna other than those listed is expressly forbidden in accordance with the FCC rules CFR47 part 15.204. Note: Detached antennas, whether installed indoors or out, should be installed ONLY by experienced antenna installation professionals who are familiar with local building and safety codes and, wherever applicable, are licensed by the appropriate government regulatory authorities. Failure to do so may void the No Wires Needed Product Warranty and may expose the end user to legal and financial liabilities. No Wires Needed and its resellers or distributors are not liable for injury, damage or violation of government regulations associated with the installation of detached antennas.”
