Additionally, it modulates tag information such as the tag ID onto the signal sent to the cell controller receive antenna. The tag has three important design parameters: cost, battery life and size. Low tag cost is achieved by making the tag RF and digital design as simple as possible while using off the shelf components. In addition, an Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) further reduces cost. Battery life is achieved with low-current RF and digital designs and by utilizing a small duty cycle. Size is achieved by a combination of surface-mount technology and three-dimensional CAD tools. Radiated testing was performed at an antenna to EUT distance of 3 meters below 1 GHz, and at a distance of 3 or 1 meter(s) above 1 GHz. The actual test distance used is noted in the test data sheets. The device’s performance was investigated to 40GHz. The EUT was powered by a 6 VDC battery for all tests. The device is voltage regulated, however, a fresh battery was used every few hours to ensure that the maximum emissions were recorded. Since the tag can be operated in any orientation, the tag emissions were maximized in each of the three orthogonal axes and the maximum reading was recorded. The integrated antenna cannot be maximized separately. The tag was set to operate continuous on and a duty cycle calculation was used (see Timing Diagram calculation). All other performance tests were made in accordance with the procedures outlined in P…

Timing Diagram and Duty-Cycle Calculation: Below is a capture of the transmission pulse. Tag On Transmission Pulse Tag Off Transmission Pulse Assuming the worst case is 100% on, the device transmits 2.3ms per pulse at the rate shown below. t1=transmit pulse=2.3ms t2=wait time>1s This calculates to the maximum averaging factor allowance (-20dB). AveFact = 20 x log (2.3ms/1000ms) = -52dB Therefore, a 20dB reduction is taken for all peak readings above 1GHz. t1 t2 t1 t2 t1 t2
