A test activation transmitter is located within the Qualifier hand held device (HHD). The transmitter provides an activation signal to the Qualifier Vehicle Mounted Device (VMD) and sets up the HHD to measure levels of ingress from the VMD signal appearing in the return upstream path. With the HHD connected to either the residential ground block or the drop tap, a press of the HHD button activates the VMD to ge…

Dear Mr. Johnson: Below are the comments that you have provided regarding the application for certification referenced above. Our responses to those comments are in bold italic. Many responses refer you to additional exhibit(s) which has been uploaded to the application folder at the ATCB website. Thank you for your attention. Please feel free to contact us for any additional information that you may require. Regards, Steven D. Koster EMC Operations Manager Brian J. Dettling Documentation Specialist WLL Project: 7044 1) The FCC application form shows confidentiality is requested but no letter requesting confidentiality of exhibits has been provided. Either provide a confidentiality letter or amend the application form. Confidentiality can be requested for the block diagram exhibit, the schematic diagram exhibit and the operational description exhibit. The parts list exhibit is not needed since the schematic diagram has component values on it. The additional information exhibit that contains operating parameters of the MC33493 transmitter cannot be held confidential because it is available on Motorola’s Website at www.freescale.com. Response to ATCB Comments FCC ID: ???????? 2 R. Per the text message added to the application, the applicant is not seeking confidentiality. The 731 form has been corrected. Please see “HHD Application Form - 731 revised”. 2) The test report does not contain a 99% bandwidth for IC compliance as required by Section A1.1.3 of RSS-210, Issue 7. Please provide this data in an amended test report. R. The report has been corrected. Please see “HHD Test Report revised”. 3) The IC application form submitted to ATCB has the wrong company number on page 1 and 2 of the form. The correct company number for Comsonics is 4261A not 4761A as shown on the IC application form. In addition, the information on page 2 of this form for Field Strength, Emission Designator, and Transmitter Spurious has not been completed. Please submit a corrected IC application form. R. The form has been corrected. Please see “HHD Application Form – IC revised”. 4) The model number listed on Annex A of RSS-102 (page 3 of the IC application form) does not agree with the model number on the IC application form submitted to ATCB. The model number is 101393-001 not HHD as shown on Annex A. Please submit a corrected Annex A. R. Please see “HHD Application Form – IC revised”. 5) For Your Information – I have noticed two minor errors in the user’s manual for this device. I recommend that they be corrected as soon as possible. a. The statement required by Section 15.21 of the FCC Rules really belongs under the section of the manual for the HHD device not the VMD device. b. The IC statement from Section 7.1.5 of RSS-Gen, Issue 2 should be under the IC section of the user manual. Currently no statement is there. Either add this statement or place a combined FCC and IC statement at the beginning of this information about the compliance of the device to both FCC and IC standards. Since these statements are similar many manufacturers are doing this. R. This has been passed on to the client. Thank you.

Theory of Operation - Radio System Qualifier X-Ray Hand Held Device (HHD) RF energy is produced at U4 (MC33493) a self-contained ASK Transmitter IC. Output frequency is controlled by a crystal at Y1 (13.56MHz), which serves as the reference for an internal PLL circuit to the MC33493, and programming of internal PLL registers. Transmitter output is prohibited if the PLL is out of lock. The internal PLL registers are programmed by the microcontroller at U5. Maximum RF output level is determined by the resistor value at R8 (12K). The microcontroller at U5 (MC68HC908QY2) controls the transmitter's frequency, mode of operation (On Off Keying - OOK), and produces the data stream sent by the transmitter. The antenna is contained within the unit's outer, plastic housing and consists of a copper trace on the printed circuit board. The antenna is approximately 1-7/8” in length. The MC33493 data sheet is included in this documentation package.

The test report and application are submitted for a Periodic Intentional Radiator under Part 15.231 of the FCC Rules and Regulations and Spectrum Management and Telecommunications Policy RSS-210 of Industry Canada. This Federal Communication Commission (FCC) Certification Test Report documents the test configuration and test results for a Comsonics, Inc. Qualifier X-Ray HHD. Testing was performed on an Open Area Test Site (OATS) of Washington Laboratories, Ltd, 7560 Lindbergh Drive, Gaithersburg, MD 20879. Site description and site attenuation data have been placed on file with the FCC's Sampling and Measurements Branch at the FCC laboratory in Columbia, MD. The Industry Canada OATS numbers are 3035A-1 and 3035A-2 for Washington Laboratories, Ltd. Site 1 and Site 2, respectively. Washington Laboratories, Ltd. has been accepted by the FCC and approved by NIST NVLAP (NVLAP Lab Code: 200066-0) as an independent FCC test laboratory. The Comsonics, Inc. Qualifier X-Ray HHD complies with the limits for a Periodic Intentional Radiator device under FCC Part 15.231 and Industry Canada RSS-210.
