Computers use radio communications to send data between each other. You can communicate directly with other wireless computers, or connect to an existing network through a wireless access point. When you set up your wireless adapter, you select the operating mode for the kind of wireless network you want. You can use your Intel(R) PRO/Wireless adapter to connect to other similar wireless devices that comply with the 802.11 standard for wireless networking. Choosing a Wireless LAN Mode Wireless LANs can operate with or without access points, depending on the number of users in the network. Infrastructure mode uses access points to allow wireless computers to send and receive information. Wireless computers transmit to the access point, the access point receives the information and rebroadcasts it to other computers. The access point can also connect to a wired network or to the Internet. Multiple access points can work together to provide coverage over a wide area. Peer-to-Peer mode, also called Ad Hoc mode, works without access points and allows wireless computers to send information directly to other wireless computers. You can use Peer-to-Peer mode to network computers in a home or small office or to set up a temporary wireless network for a meeting. Configuring a Wireless LAN There are three basic components that must be configured for a wireless LAN to operate properly: • Network Name—Each wireless network uses a unique Network Name to identify the network. This name is called the Service Set Identifier (SSID). When you set up your wireless adapter, you specify the SSID. If you want to connect to an existing network, you must use the name for that network. If you are setting up your own network you can make up your own name and use it on each computer. The name can be up to 32 characters long and contain letters and numbers. • Profiles—When you set up your computer to access a wireless network, Intel(R) PROSet creates a profile for the wireless settings that you specify. If you want to connect to another network, you can scan for existing networks and make a temporary connection, or create a new profile for that network. After you create profiles, your computer will automatically connect when you change locations. • Security—The 802.11 wireless networks use encryption to help protect your data. Wired equivalent privacy (WEP) uses a 64-bit or 128-bit shared encryption key to scramble data. Before a computer transmits data, it scrambles the data using the secret encryption key. The receiving computer uses this same key to unscramble the data. If you are connecting to an existing network, use the encryption key provided by the administrator of the wireless network. If you are setting up your own network you can make up your own key and use it on each computer. Identifying a Wireless Network Depending on the size and components of a wireless LAN, there are many ways to identify a wireless LAN: • The Network Name or Service Set Identifier (SSID)—Identifies a wireless network. All wireless devices on the network must use the same SSID. • Extended Service Set Identifier (ESSID)—A special case of SSID used to identify a wireless network that includes access points. • Independent Basic Service Set Identifier (IBSSID)—A special case of SSID used to identify a network of wireless computers configured to communicate directly with one another without using an access point. • Basic Service Set Identifier (BSSID)—A unique identifier for each wireless device. The BSSID is the Ethernet MAC address of the device. • Broadcast SSID—An access point can respond to computers sending probe packets with the broadcast SSID. If this feature is enabled on the access point, any wireless user can associate with the access point by using a blank (null) SSID. Surveying the Site of Your Wireless LAN Conducting a site survey for your wireless LAN is the most crucial step in the process of setting up a wireless network. It operates at 1, 2, 5.5, and 11 Mbps. The Mini PCI card uses a Complementary code keying (CCK) baseband and SA2400 IC for modulation, demodulation, spreading and despreading of the RF signal. LAN 2100 The Intel® PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 miniPCI adapter implements the 82531ME, 802.11b CCK Baseband, and the Philips SA2400 radio ICs . 82531ME MAC Baseband OFDM processor CCK Baseband Processor Antennas MINI PCI Interface SA2400 2.4 GHz Radio Chip Tx, Rx Figure 1: Simplified Block Diagram for the Intel® PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 miniPCI adapter Transmit mode: The “upper” Media Access Control (MAC) logic inside the 82531ME is used to send and receive packets and transfers data to/from the host computer via the miniPCI interface. The 85231ME communicates with the CCK BBP IC through a special parallel interface called the Host Bus (H-BUS) interface. This i nterface uses registers with double-synchronizing flip-flops on all communica tion signals to prevent any ti ming-related problems between the two ICs. The CCK BBP IC functions as a “lower” MAC for the 80211b standard. This IC is also used to generate differential, analog I/Q vo ltage levels. The transmit I/Q signals are generated by 10 bit DACs (while the rece ive I/Q signals are read by 8 bit ADCs). These voltage level signals are first converted to current levels by external resistors networks and then are up-converted inside the SA2400 to the desired transmitt ing frequency. An integrated 4 th order low-pass Butterworth 9.75MHz filt er is used in the up-converter section fo r spectral shaping and reconstruction filterin g. Please note, that since this is a zero-IF typ e design, there are no Intermediate Frequency (IF) stages used. The SA2400 beats the IQ modulation directly up to the appropriate frequency of ope ration set by its built-in PLL. Upon exiting from the SA2400, this differential signal is transformed to single ended form using a discrete balu n circuit. The balun is designed to convert 100ohm differential impedance to 50ohms single ended impedance while also supplying proper bias voltage to the output stage of the Philips IC. From the output of the balun, the signal is band pass filtered with a ceramic 2400 to 2500MHz Band Pas s filter (BPF). This filtered signal is then attenuated using a 6dB, 50ohm resi stive pi-attenuator network. A MAXIM 2242 chip scale RF Power am plifier (PA) IC is used to amplify the low level filtered compos ite signal to approximately +20dBm levels. At the output of the PA, a ceramic 2400 to 2500MHz Low Pass Filter (LPF) is used to reduce harmonic content in the amplified si gnal. From this point the signal is routed through the single band anten na diversity switch to one of the two U.FL antennae connector s. A discrete logic IC (not shown in the diagram) is used to decode antennae switching information from the CCK BBP IC in order to correctly operat e the antenna switch. This IC is a 74LVC08 IC on the back of the PCB. An RF signal level of approx -5dBm at the output of the SA2400 IC can be expected to produce an amplified RF signal of approxim ately +16dBm at the antennae connectors. Receive mode: During receive; the signal is first routed through a ceramic 24 00 to 2500MHz Band Pass filter (BPF) and through a single transi stor, Low Noise Amplifier (LNA). The amplified and filtered signal is then attenuated via a 6dB, 50ohm resistive pi-attenuator network. A 50ohm to 100ohm integrated balun is then used to convert the single ended signal to a differential voltage which can be applied to the receive terminals on the SA2400 IC. The LNA and attenuator form an isolation network which is requir ed to isolate the low level Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) frequency leakage from the antennae. An isolation network helps to reduce DC offsets that occur when switching antennae in diversity application s. Inside the SA2400, the received signal is first amplified with an Automatic Gain Controlled (AGC) amplifier and then mixed down in frequency (from RF to DC) using a quadrature IQ up/down mixer. From her e the downconverted signal is then low-pass filtered using Chebych ev 5 th order active filters. A DC cancellation mechanism is able to reduce DC offsets by 70dB hence clipping of the baseband signals can be avoided. The baseband IQ signals are transmitted differentially via current signal which are converted to voltage by the external resist or networks. These differential analog IQ voltage levels are read by the 6 bit ADCs inside of the CCK BBP IC. The CCK BBP IC is used to demodulate the IQ signals to produce packets of data whic h is communicated to the 82531ME upper MAC a nd onwards to the host computer via the miniPCI bus. Response to TCB Findings 1. Please supply an operational description for the Calexico WLAN module. Supplied. See Annex2. 2. Please supply the details of both antennas used in the laptop. We have an Appendix I - Antenna Information file. Does this apply for both transmitters? Yes, there are two Antennas used in the device - one for each transmitter. Both antennas are identical (Monopole) as shown in Appendix I. Also refer to the revised test report - pg 18, section 4.6. 3. In the test report the band-edge measurement at 2483.5MHz is only submitted for Calexico WLAN module, please supply the same measurement for the Bluetooth module. Supplied. Refer to the revised test report pg 12 Section 4.3.2. 4. Please describe the spectrum analyzer settings for the 30-1000MHz radiated emissions test. (RBW, VBW) Supplied with the revised test report. 5. The user manual needs a warning against antenna co-location issues stating that the transmitters must not be co-located or operating in conjunction with any other antenna or transmitter. Supplied. Please refer to the revised user manuals for both transmitters. 6. Please ask Fujitsu if the transmitters are capable of working when the laptop lid is in closed position? Fujitsu have confirmed that the transmitters are OFF when the lid is in the closed position. The system goes to 'standby'. This also explained in the revised test report.
