Users Manual

802MI3B User’s Manual 1. Wireless LAN Basics Wireless LAN (Local Area Networks) systems offer a great number of advantages over a traditional, wired system. Wireless LANs (WLANs) are more flexible, easier to setup and manage and often more cost effective than their wired equivalence. Using radio frequency (RF) technology. WLANs transmit and receive data over the air, minimizing the need for wired connections. Thus, WLANs combine data connectivity with user mobility, and, through simplified configuration, enable movable LANs. With wireless LANs, users can access shared information without looking for a place to plug in and network managers can set up or augment networks without installing or moving wires. Wireless LANs offer the following productivity, convenience and cost advantages over traditional wired networks.• z Mobility – Wireless LAN systems can provide LAN users with access to real-time information anywhere in their organization. This mobility supports productivity and service opportunities not possible with wired networks. z Installation Speed and Simplicity – Installing a wireless LAN system can be fast and easy and can eliminate the need to pull cable through walls and ceilings. z Installation Flexibility – wireless technology allows the network to go where wires cannot go. z Reduced Cost-of-Ownership – While the initial investment required for wireless LAN hardware might be higher than the cost of wired LAN hardware, overall installation expenses and lifecycle costs will be significantly lower. Long- term cost benefits are greatest in dynamic environments requiring frequent moves, adds, and changes. z Scalability – Wireless LAN systems can be configured in a variety of topologies to meet the needs of specific applications and installations. Configurations are easily changed and range from peer-to-peer networks suitable for a small number of users to full infrastructure networks of thousands of users that allows roaming over a broad area. 2. Installation and Overview Here are some steps you will perform in establishing your wireless network connection: z Install Access Point at first. AP is needed in case of Infrastructure network mode. z Install software using the Installation Disktette. z Install network protocol(s) required to communicate on your network. American Telecommunications Certification Body Inc. 6731 Whittier Ave, McLean, VA 22101 December 19, 2002 RE: FCC ID: QP7-802MI3B Attention: Ellis Wu I have a few comments on this Application. 1. Please note that the 731 states the application is for a miniPCI adapter. This would mean either a modular approval or a Limited Modular approval. Since it was not tested standalone, the device cannot be granted as a module and must be granted strictly as a Limited Modular Approval for use in the specific host in which it was tested (i.e. the Asus L3000 Laptop). You must also provide information as to which of the modular requirements the device meets. xxx 2. Please note, as mentioned above, you did not test this device in stand alone configuration. This means that as it stands, you can only install this device in the laptop that it was tested in and only by the OEM of the laptop. Your installation manual indicates use in an access point. This is not possible for the above reasons. Please provide a manual that correctly supports the product as tested (i.e. the manual that shows this device in the specific host in which it is installed and tested - the Asus L3000 laptop). xxx 3. Please note, the antenna(s) for this device appear to be located in the bottom portion of the laptop significantly closer than 20cm to the body. This means that your 20cm statement in the manual is not correct. Please remove it and replace it with a correct rf exposure statement. xxx 4. FYI If you wish to be able to sell this device so it can be installed in any other device than the laptop in which it was tested (i.e. the access point in the manual you provided), you must retest the device as standalone and provide evidence of the devices into which it is to be installed. xx Dennis Ward mailto:[email protected] The items indicated above must be submitted before processing can continue on the above referenced application. Failure to provide the requested information may result in application termination. Correspondence should be considered part of the permanent submission and may be viewed from the Internet after a Grant of Equipment Authorization is issued. Please do not respond to this correspondence using the email reply button. In order for your response to be processed expeditiously, you must submit your documents through the AmericanTCB.com website. Also, please note that partial responses increase processing time and should not be submitted. Any questions about the content of this correspondence should be directed to the sender.

ADDRESS: 3F, No. 170, Ming Chuan E. Rd., Sec. 3, Taipei, Taiwan, R.O.C. ISSUED BY: Advance Data Technology Corporation LAB LOCATION: 47 14th Lin, Chiapau Tsun, Linko, Taipei, Taiwan, R.O.C. 0528 ILAC MRA Lab Code: 200102-0 FCC ID: QP7-802MI3B ADT No.: 911016R02 RF Exposure Measurement 1. Introduction 2.4 GHz frequency band is regarded specially as a dangerous band for its heating harmfulness to the human body. That’s why microwave oven is operating in this frequency band. The manufacturer whose product is working in this frequency band is obligatory to prove the harmfulness of his product. In this document, we try to prove the safety of radiation harmfulness to the human body for our product. The limit for Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE) specified in FCC 1.1310 is followed. The Gain of the antenna used in this product is measured in a Fully Anechoic Chamber (FAC), and the maximum total power input to the antenna is measured. Through the Friis transmission formula and the maximum gain of the antenna, we can calculate the distance, away from the product, where the limit of MPE is reached. 2. RF Exposure Limit According to FCC 1.1310: The criteria listed in the following table shall be used to evaluate the environmental impact of human exposure to radio-frequency (RF) radiation as specified in 1.1307(b). FCC ID: QP7-802MI3B ADT No.: 911016R02 LIMITS FOR MAXIMUM PERMISSIBLE EXPOSURE (MPE) Frequency Range (MHz) Electric Field Strength (V/m) Magnetic Field Strength (A/m) Power Density (mW/cm 2 ) Average Time (minutes) (A)Limits For Occupational / Control Exposures 30-30061.40.1631.06 300-1500......F/3006 1500-100,000......56 (B)Limits For General Population / Uncontrolled Exposure 30-30027.50.0730.230 300-1500......F/150030 1500-100,000......1.030 F = Frequency in MHz 3. Friis Formula Friis transmission formula : Pd = (Pout*G) / (4*pi*r 2 ) where Pd = power density in mW/cm 2 Pout = output power to antenna in mW G = gain of antenna in linear scale Pi = 3.1416 R = distance between observation point and center of the radiator in cm Pd is the limit of MPE, 1 mW/cm 2 . If we know the maximum Gain of the antenna and the total power input to the antenna, through the calculation, we will know the distance r where the MPE limit is reached. Ref. : David K.
