About This Manual The purpose of this manual is for the setup of the 11Mbps Wireless LAN ODU. This manual, revised as version 4.0.3 in 2004, includes procedures assisting you in avoiding unforeseen problems. Technical Support If you have difficulty resolving the problem while installing or using the Wireless LAN ODU, please contact the supplier for support. Reminder: To comply with FCC part 15 rules, the ODU must only be used as a system as FCC certified. The system must also be professionally installed to ensure compliance with the Part 15 certification. It is the responsibility of the operator and professional installer to ensure that only certified systems are deployed in where FCC rules apply. Further, according to FCC Part 15 regulations, Section 15.247(b)(3)(iii), the installer must ensure that the high-gain directional antenna used in this system is used exclusively for fixed, point-to-point operations and that multiple co-located intentional radiators transmitting the same information are not used. For further information, please see Appendix B. This equipment should be installed and operated with fix-mounted antennas that are installed with a minimum of 2 meters of separation distance between the antenna and all persons’ body during normal operation. Fully compliant with IEEE802.11b standard, the Outdoor Unit (ODU) provides powerful features such as the Windows-based configuration utility, MAC address filtering, WEP security and more. 1-1 Features and Benefits Creates a Point-to-Point connection linking two LANs, using 2 Indoor Units or Indoor and Outdoor total solutions. Creates a Point-to-Multipoint system using three or more Indoor Units or Indoor and Outdoor total solutions. Detachable antenna allows you for the use of external high gain antenna. This calculation is based on the highest EIRP possible from the system, considering maximum power and antenna gain, and considering a 1.0 mW/cm 2 uncontrolled exposure limit. The formula shown in OET Bulletin 65 is used in the calculation. Equation from page 19 of OET Bulletin 65, Edition 97-01 is: S= PG / 4πR 2 where: S = power density (in appropriate units, e.g. mW/cm 2 ) P = power input to the antenna (in appropriate units, e.g., mW) G = power gain of the antenna in the direction of interest relative to an isotropic radiator R = distance to the center of radiation of the antenna (appropriate units, e.g., cm) hence R= (PG / 4πS) 1/2 For our device P = 177.83 mW G = 398.1 S = Exposure limit = 1.0 mW/cm 2 R = ((177.83 * 398.1) / (4*π*1.0)) 1/2 = 75.1 cm For complying the FCC limits for general population/uncontrolled exposure, the minimum MPE distance is 75.1 cm. The minimum distance declared by the manufacturer is 2 meters, which is greater than the minimum MPE distance. This means that according to OET Bulletin 65 (Edition 97-01), Supplement C (Edition 01-01), the equipment fulfills the requirements on power density for general population/uncontrolled exposure and therefore fulfills the requirements of 47 CFR Part 15.247 (b)(5).
