Federal Communications Commission Date: May 27, 2010 P.O. Box 429 Columbia, MD 21045 RE: Application for Limited Modular Approval Certification for the AMI6 register module Dear Sir or Madam: The following information addresses the requirements to support a limited modular approval as required by FCC Part 15.212, Modular Transmitters. 1. The direct sequence spread spectrum transmitter section is not shielded. Testing has been performed to assure compliance. The frequency hopping spread spectrum transmitter section has been shielded. 2. The AMI6 does not have external modulation or data inputs. The RF section is driven by an on board MCU which controls RF data lines and does not allow excessive modulation. 3. The modular transmitter has its own power regulation. The module will be integrated into a meter host which also offers power regulation. 4. The direct sequence and frequency hopping transmitters have antennas that are permanently imbedded into the module circuit board. 5. The AMI6 module was tested within a host meter. This module will always be integrated internal to a meter host. 6. The AMI6 register module will be labeled as required. The meter host will also have the required labeling. 7. Operating requirements are included in the host technical manual. 8. MPE measurements are provided to demonstrate RF compliance. There is a cautionary statement that is included in the technical manual stipulating the 20 cm separation distance. All meter forms which act as hosts to the AMI6 module will be tested with the AMI6 module for compliance and documented through the permissive change process. Sincerely, Name: Lee Littlejohn Signature: Title: Regulatory Engineer Date: May 27, 2010
Date: May 27, 2010 Itron OEMs: This note serves as an additional agreement between Itron and its OEMs stating that the OEMs will use the Itron AMI6 module (Figure 1) in accordance with the FCC rules on limited modular approval devices. The unit will be professionally installed inside various Itron meter forms (Figure 2). In addition, the module label will be located to display the FCC and IC IDs of the AMI6 module to be externally visible when installed. Confidentiality of the internal photos is being requested because this is a non-consumer device which is not accessible by the general public, professionally installed, and is only serviceable by the Itron, or designated technicians. Confidentiality of the technical manual is also being requested due to the technical nature of the manual. The manual is not provided to the general public because the general public cannot service the device Please feel free to contact me with any questions. Sincerely, Lee Littlejohn Regulatory Engineer Itron, Inc. 313 North Highway 11 West Union, South Carolina 29696 [email protected] Figure 1: Itron AMI6 module, FCC ID: SK9AMI6 Figure 2: Itron AMI6 module installed in Itron meter form
5015 B. U. Bowman Dr. Buford, GA 30518 June 8, 2010 ACS TCB 5015 B.U. Bowman Drive Buford, GA 30518 Re: FCC ID: SK9AMI6 To Whom It May Concern: The following application is submitted on behalf of our client, Itron Electricity Metering, Inc., for evaluation of their model AMI6 for certification under FCC Part 15.247. The AMI6 is a stand-alone module designed to be integrated into specific host devices. The AMI6 is a composite device which contains (2) transceivers. These include (1) frequency hopping 900 MHz LAN radio and (1) 2.4 GHz Zigbee radios each of which was evaluated separately to the corresponding rules and found to be in compliance. The AMI6 was evaluated in host devices representative of the final installation. Both radios can transmit simultaneously therefore the device was also evaluated for radiated inter- modulation products and found to be in compliance. Sincerely, Sam Wismer Vice President, Technology Advanced Compliance Solutions, Inc.

Summation of Power Densities β Simultaneous Transmissions This device contains multiple transmitters which can operate simultaneously and therefore the maximum RF exposure is determined by the summation of power densities. The 900 MHz LAN and 2.4GHz Zigbee radio can operate simultaneously there it is appropriate to include both of those power density values in the summation of power densities. The maximum power density is calculated by a summation of power densities for each simultaneous transmission combination as follows: 900MHz LAN: 0.100 (mW/cm^2) 2.4GHz Zigbee: 0.037 (mW/cm^2) TOTAL: 0.137 (mW/cm^2) Model: AMI6 FCC ID: SK9AMI6 IC: 864G-AMI6 ACS Report: 10-0158.W06 Advanced Compliance Solutions Page 3 Installation Guidelines The installation manual should contain text similar to the following advising how to install the equipment to maintain compliance with the FCC RF exposure requirements: RF Exposure In accordance with FCC requirements of human exposure to radio frequency fields, the radiating element shall be installed such that a minimum separation distance of 20 centimeters will be maintained. Conclusion This device complies with the MPE requirements by providing adequate separation between the device, any radiating structure and the general population.
