These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a residential installation. This equipment generates uses and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instructions, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. If this equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or television reception, which can be determined by turning the equipment off and on, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the following measures: Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna. Increase the separation between the equipment and receiver. Connect the equipment into an outlet on a circuit different from that to which the receiver is connected. Consult the dealer or an experienced radio/TV technician for help. Industry Canada This Class B digital apparatus meets all requirements of the Canadian Interference Causing Equipment Regulations. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: (1) this device may not cause harmful interference, and (2) this device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation. Under Industry Canada regulations, this radio transmitter may only operate using an antenna of a type and maximum (or lesser) gain approved for the transmitter by Industry Canada. To reduce potential radio interference to other users, the antenna type and its gain should be so chosen that the equivalent isotropically radiated power (e.i.r.p.) is not more than that necessary for successful communication. RF Exposure The antenna(s) used for this transmitter must be installed to provide a separation distance of at least 20 cm from all persons and must not be co-located or operating in conjunction with any other antenna or transmitter. End-users and installers must be provided with antenna installation instructions and transmitter operating conditions for satisfying RF exposure compliance. Miscellaneous The user’s manual for any product that contains this module will contain the following text: Professional Installation This module is intended for professional installation by the integrator. The OEM integrator is still responsible for the FCC compliance requirement of the end product, which integrates this module. Modification and Repairs To ensure FCC compliance and system performance, this device, antenna and/or coaxial assembly shall not be changed or modified without the express written approval of Itron. Any unauthorized modification will void the user’s authority to operate the equipment. WARNING! This device contains no user serviceable parts. Attempts to repair this device by unauthorized personnel may subject the person to shock hazard if removal of protective covers is attempted. Unauthorized repair will void the warranty and/or maintenance contract with your company. General Description The Itron AMI7 is an electricity metering module which includes the register and display features for the meter as well as a Zigbee transmitter that operates in the 2405 MHz to 2475 MHz band and a LAN transmitter that operates in the 902 MHz to 928 MHz band. The module operates on alternating current voltage which is supplied by a host device.
Date: March 31, 2011 Itron OEMs: This note serves as an additional agreement between Itron and its OEMs stating that the OEMs will use the Itron AMI7 module (Figure 1) in accordance with the FCC rules on limited modular approval devices. The unit will be professionally installed and all hosts will be tested for compliance with the AMI7 module installed. (Figure 2) In addition, the module label will be located to display the FCC and IC IDs of the AMI7 module to be externally visible when installed. Confidentiality of the internal ph otos is being requested because this is a non-consumer device which is not accessible by the general public, professionally installed, and is only serviceable by the Itron, or designated technicians. Federal Communications Commission Date: April 25, 2011 Equipment Authorization Branch 7435 Oakland Mills Road Columbia, MD 21046 Gentlemen: Itron Electricity Metering, Inc. respectfully requests confidentiality of certain materials provided with the submission of the AMI7 under FCC ID: SK9AMI7 in accordance with FCC Regulations 0.459. The confidentiality request applies to the following exhibits: 11-0093 – Schematics.pdf 11-0093 – System Block Diagram.pdf 11-0093 – Theory of Operation.pdf 11-0093 – Internal Photos.pdf Confidentiality of the Internal Photos is being requested because this is a non-consumer device which is not accessible by the general public, professionally installed, and is only serviceable by the applicant or designated technicians. The AMI7 has been developed at considerable effort and expense by Itron Electricity Metering, Inc. These items are considered as Trade Secrets and therefore public access to the proprietary material could possibly result in duplication of equipment that could severely damage the company’s business advantage. I appreciate your assistance in this matter. Sincerely, Lee Littlejohn Regulatory Engineer
Federal Communications Commission Date: April 25, 2011 P.O. Box 429 Columbia, MD 21045 RE: Application for Limited Modular Approval Certification for the AMI7 register module Dear Sir or Madam: The following information addresses the requirements to support a limited modular approval as required by FCC Part 15.212, Modular Transmitters. 1. The direct sequence spread spectrum transmitter section is not shielded. Testing has been performed to assure compliance. The frequency hopping spread spectrum transmitter section has been shielded. 2. The AMI7 does not have external modulation or data inputs. The RF section is driven by an on board MCU which controls RF data lines and does not allow excessive modulation. 3. The modular transmitter has its own power regulation. The module will be integrated into a meter host which also offers power regulation. 4. The direct sequence and frequency hopping transmitters have antennas that are permanently imbedded into the module circuit board. 5. The AMI7 module was tested within a host meter. This module will always be integrated internal to a meter host. 6. The AMI7 register module will be labeled as required. The meter host will also have the required labeling. 7. Operating requirements are included in the host technical manual. 8. MPE measurements are provided to demonstrate RF compliance. There is a cautionary statement that is included in the technical manual stipulating the 20 cm separation distance. All meter forms which act as hosts to the AMI7 module will be tested with the AMI7 module for compliance and documented through the permissive change process. Sincerely, Name: Lee Littlejohn Signature: Title: Regulatory Engineer Date: April 25, 2011

Summation of Power Densities – Simultaneous Transmissions This device contains multiple transmitters which can operate simultaneously and therefore the maximum RF exposure is determined by the summation of power densities. The 900 MHz LAN and 2.4GHz Zigbee radio can operate simultaneously there it is appropriate to include both of those power density values in the summation of power densities. The maximum power density is calculated by a summation of power densities for each simultaneous transmission combination as follows: 900MHz LAN: 0.227 (mW/cm^2) 2.4GHz Zigbee: 0.031 (mW/cm^2) TOTAL: 0.258 (mW/cm^2) Model: AMI7 FCC ID: SK9AMI7 IC: 864G-AMI7 ACS Report: 11-0093.W06 Advanced Compliance Solutions Page 3 Installation Guidelines The installation manual should contain text similar to the following advising how to install the equipment to maintain compliance with the FCC RF exposure requirements: RF Exposure In accordance with FCC requirements of human exposure to radio frequency fields, the radiating element shall be installed such that a minimum separation distance of 20 centimeters will be maintained. Conclusion This device complies with the MPE requirements by providing adequate separation between the device, any radiating structure and the general population.
