The master module is typically installed in a DVR, Blu-ray player or a gaming console and transmits digital audio wirelessly to the client device which is typically installed in an audio speaker. The 444- 2213 is not compatible with any other device other than Summit Semiconductor’s Master Module. The 444-2213 digital wireless audio client device was tested at NWEMC’s Oregon facility for rule parts 15.247 and 15.407. The device was also tested for all the requirements necessary to certify it as a modular transmitter. The test set up photos and the technical test report has all the details about the performance and results of the device. Dear Application Examiner: Summit Semiconductor LLC hereby requests FCC Equipment Authorization and Evaluation branch to approve Summit Semiconductor’s Model 444-2213 Audio Wireless Client Module, FCC ID- UA9400 as having a full modular approval. The 444-2213 Audio Wireless Client Module is a production ready module designed for audio speakers in Summit Semiconductor’s high definition wireless audio solution. The module is designed to be mounted to the interior of the speaker cabinet. This letter addresses the information required by points one through eight of 47 CFR 15.212. 1. “The modular transmitter must have its own RF shielding .” The radio section of the module is enclosed within a RF shield. The RF shield is solder mounted to exposed grounding of the circuit board. The point of contact between the shield and the board has multiple ground contacts. The internal photos exhibit has pictures of the wireless client device with and without the shield. The shield suppresses spurious radiations as per FCC requirements. 2. “The modular transmitter must have buffered modulation/data inputs.” The 444-2213 has buffered data inputs from an on-chip embedded processor. The purpose of this is to transmit control and status information back to the master device. This method insures compliance with Part 15 requirements under conditions of excessive data rates or over modulation. 3. “The modular transmitter must have its own power supply regulation .” The 444-2213 digital wireless client device receives power from an external +3.3 VDC supply via an industry standard power supply jack. The 3.3 volt DC is regulated to 1.5 and 2.8 volts VDC as well as it uses the 3.3 VDC directly. In order to comply with the requirement that all voltages be regulated, we have included an over voltage detection circuit which ceases RF transmission when the input voltage exceeds 3.6 VDC. Also, the technical report exhibit contains AC power line conducted emissions data taken with the EUT powered from a linear power supply that contains no EMC suppression components. 4. “The modular transmitter antenna must comply with the antenna and transmission system requirements of section 15.203, and 15.204(c).” The modular device complies with all FCC antenna requirements. The modular device is designed in such a way that the antenna is integrated with the modular device. As per the FCC 15.203 requirement, this can be considered as permanently attached and doesn’t give the user any option to replace it. A list of usable antennas is not provided since the user manual clearly instructs the user that the modular device is compatible with only the integrated antennas. Please see the internal exhibit photos for further details. The antenna report also provides a description as to how the modular device complies with the de facto EIRP limit. 5. “The modular transmitter must be tested in a stand-alone configuration .” As described in the technical report exhibit and the test set up photos of the test report included in the filing for FCC equipment authorization, the 444-2213 digital wireless client device module was tested as a stand- alone device. The 444-2213 is designed with an industry standard 40 pin multi pin flex cable and it is greater than 10 cm from the host device. 6. “The modular transmitter must be equipped with either a permanently affixed label or must be capable of electronically displaying the FCC identification number.” A FCC ID and model number is labeled on every modular device. FCC ID label and location exhibit has a photograph which shows the exact location of the label. Since the FCC ID number will not be visible when the module is installed inside the audio speaker, another label with the same FCC ID will be applied to the exterior of the speaker. 7. “The modular transmitter must comply with any specific rule or operating requirements applicable to the transmitter and the manufacturer must provide adequate instructions along with the module to explain any such requirements.” The EUT complies with all specific rules such as modulation scheme, modulation type, bandwidth, antenna requirements, power supply regulation, and suppression of spurious emissions and so on. A detailed user manual is provided with every EUT which instructs the user to maintain compliance as per the requirements of the Commission. The manual also cautions the user not to make any changes or modifications not approved by the party responsible for compliance. Please see the operating description exhibit for further details to understand how the EUT complies with specific rules and operating requirements as per FCC. 8. “The modular transmitter must comply with any applicable RF exposure requirements in its final configuration.” The EUT is compliant with all applicable RF exposure requirements and EUT is operated in a manner that ensures the public is not exposed to radio frequency in excess of Federal Communication Commission’s guidelines. 1. Does this device meet the requirements for operation in the 5400 – 5725 MHz band specified in KDB 443999? Yes, Section 3.2 of the user manual lists the available channels and states, "This device will not operate in 5600 MHz - 5650 MHz band". Furthermore, this is a client device with no radar detection and no ad-hoc capability. It meets the 15.202 definition of a client device. 2. Is this an indoor device, outdoor device, or multi-use device? A multi-use device can operate in both indoor and outdoor configurations; such device will have to meet all the requirements for outdoor device. Per the grant notes, operation in the 5150 - 5250 MHz band is restricted to indoor use only. Therefore outdoor use outside of that band is not restricted. As a client device with no radar detection capability, it meets the requirements for outdoor use per KDB 443999. 3. Verify that the 5600 – 5650 MHz band is notched. The test report should include 20 dB BW plots for the 5600 and 5650 MHz band edges and an attestation statement that the device does not transmit in the notched band. Verify that this device meets the uniform channel spreading requirements on the remaining (non- notched) channels once the device is in operation. The device meets the 15.202 definition of a client device. Channel spreading is determined by the master device. 6. Explain how this device meets the Software Configuration Control requirements of KDB 594280 including country code selection – see draft KDB at (https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/eas/comments/GetPublishedDocument.html?id=205&tn=511416 ). If there is any user permitted configuration control, please explain what controls are provided to the user and if any will take the device out of compliance; also explain what prevents the end user from downloading and operating non-US software. UA9400 meets the software configuration control requirements of KDB 594280 including the country code selection as per the below information. No user configuration controls are provided to a third party that modifies the operating parameters of frequency range, modulation type or maximum transmit power. The software is not designed or expected to be modified by any party including the manufacturer. Only the grantee can modify the software. No user accessible software will be made available. The software that controls the radio and the processor functionality are independent. Software updates are sent only to update the processor functionality. Hence the software updates will not include anything that will manipulate with the radio functionality. Country code selection is not included in this device (UA9400) since it is a client device. Country code selection is included only in a master device. 7. Additional questions for outdoor and multi-use devices: Submit a Letter Exhibit identify the specific expertise and the training required by the professional installers for installing these types of devices. As specified by the grant notes and applicant cover letter, this module is for OEM installation only. It is not professionally installed. 8. Explain how this device can meet the 30 MHz frequency separation from TDWR (i.e.: Manually blocking frequencies by the professional installer, device notches 5470 -5680 MHz, etc.) The device meets the 15.202 definition of a client device. It has no radar detection or ad-hoc capability. The TDWR requirement is for devices with radar detection capability such as master devices. KDB 443999 specifies that the TDWR requirement is only for master devices with radar detection and with DFS capability. It states, "In the interim, the Commission will now allow certification of wireless master devices with radar detection function and with DFS capability, if they meet the following conditions:" 9. Does the manual for the installers and operators contain the information on how to register the device with the voluntary industry data base if operating within 35 km of any TDWR site location? The device meets the 15.202 definition of a client device. It has no radar detection or ad-hoc capability. The TDWR requirement is for devices with radar detection capability such as master devices. KDB 443999 specifies that the TDWR requirement is only for master devices with radar detection ans with DFS capability. This not only ensures unique coupling between the antenna and the intentional radiator but also keeps the users from violating the FCC requirement per 15.203 The user manual clearly cautions the user not to try to replace the antennas and the modular device is compatible with only the integrated antennas. Hence a list of usable antennas is not furnished to the user. Also, there are no specific controls available to the user that changes the performance of the antenna. The maximum gain for the wireless audio client device is from Antenna A1 (see figure below) at 5500 and is 4.0dBi.
