Affix the supplied adhesive strip over the key hole, securing it to the exterior side of your door. This should hold the keyhole in place when you remove the thumb-latch on the inside of the door. 11 August Installation Guide 12 Step 2: Remove your existing thumb-latch. Position your thumb-latch so that you can unscrew the existing screws on your deadbolt. Remove the screws entirely from the deadbolt and keep them to assist in the next step. Your thumb-latch may include an additional back plate underneath it. If so, remove the back plate. Use the back plate and the longer screws for the next step. If you know the brand of your deadbolt, please select the correct mounting plate and adapter from the Compatibility Chart and go to Step 4 (page 18). Insert the existing screws in the thumb-latch to help you choose the correct mounting plate. If there was a back plate under your thumb-latch, insert the screws into this back plate instead of the thumb-latch. Slide the mounting plates onto the screws one at a time until you find a mounting plate that allows the screws to fit straight through the holes. A B 17 COMPATIBLE 1. 2. Remove the screws from the thumb-latch and use them to install the mounting plate over the existing deadbolt tail piece. Do not fully tighten the screws. A B 19 A B August Installation Guide 20 Step 5: Position adapter and align mounting plate. Remove the tape from the key hole, and use your key to turn your deadbolt to the fully unlocked position. If your lock was not in the Compatibility Chart, select the adapter that matches your tail piece. To do this, slide each adapter onto the tail piece. The correct adapter will have the small nub pointing up. Place the correct adapter onto the tail piece with the small nub pointing up, and tighten the two screws. (Do not over-tighten.) Position the August Smart Lock with the curved notch at the top. Pull out both side wing latches. Slide August Smart Lock over adapter and tail piece and attach to mounting plate. Make sure the back of the lock is flush with the door. To secure the August Smart Lock, clamp down both side wing latches to the mounting plate completely and remove the clear tape from the curved notch. Remove the two plastic tabs from the battery contacts. Make sure batteries are properly seated in the battery compartment. Align faceplate hooks with the August Smart Lock. The faceplate will lock into place with the logo at the bottom. August Home Inc. 8/07/2014 Model: ASL-01 FCC: 2AB6UASL01 IC: 12163A-ASL01 1 | P a g e ASL-01 Operational Description (Theory of Operation) The August Smart Lock (ALS-01) is a device that allows remote locking/unlocking of a user’s door. The ASL-01 is placed over the door’s existing “dead-bolt” lock on the inside of the user’s door. The ASL-01 measures 3.39” dia. x 2.24” height (86mm dia. x 57mm height) and weighs 14.0 oz. (400 g). No special tools are required for installing and removing the lock once the mounting plate has initially been installed (requiring a common screwdriver included with each lock). The ASL-01 is mounted and secured by means of a set of mounting tabs (operated by the user’s fingers) on the back of each unit. The ASL-01 can be easily installed and removed giving the user access to the serial number, FCC, and IC information (the labels are placed on the back of the ASL-01 for aesthetic reasons). After installing the ASL-01 and inserting batteries (x 4 AA alkaline), the unit begins broadcasting (Bluetooth low energy (BLE)) advertising packets. The advertising packet broadcast interval is once every 318.75 ms (at a power level of 0dBm). The user connects to the ASL-01 using their smartphone (iOS or Android) running the August smart lock application. Once the ASL-01 has been discovered by the user’s smartphone, the August application will connect to the ASL-01 automatically. After connecting, the user can registers and calibrates the ASL-01. Once calibrated, the user can lock and unlock their door via the ASL-01 and a smartphone. Any Bluetooth v4.0 (BLE) master (or central) can query and connect to the ASL-01 (which is always a client or peripheral) but the commands to change the state of the lock (unlock, lock & calibrate), are proprietary and encrypted. Connections with a BLE master will terminate after 30 seconds if no valid commands are received by the ASL-01. The 30 second time-out feature prevents radio jamming. When the ASL-01 is not connected to the user’s smart phone or other BLE master, the unit will return to advertising mode. The maximum power output of the ALS-01 is based on the Bluetooth BLE radio of the Texas Instrument CC2541 microcontroller (which has a maximum output power of 0dBm). The ASL-01 receiver sensitivity is - 88dBm (typical). Steps for Operating the ASL-01: Remote Unlock: 1. Start the August smart lock application on smartphone. 2. Stand near the ASL-01 and wait for the application to indicate it has established a connection. 3. Operate the ASL-01 and lock by pressing buttons on the smartphone application. 4. Open the door and Enter/Exit home. 5. Use smartphone application to re-lock the door. The ASL-01 does not prevent the user from using their door lock in the traditional way. Keys can still be used to lock/unlock the door and the ASL-01 can be manually rotated to lock/unlock the door from the inside of the home. The antenna is an “Inverted F” or “IFA” type PCB antenna designed into the top layer of the PCB. The antenna is laid out using a meandering pattern in order to save space. The layout and performance of the antenna can be found in the attached Application Note (AN043) from Texas Instruments. The RF section and antenna of the ASL-01 were copied from the FCC certified Texas Instruments reference design. The exact dimensions of the layout are described in the attached application note (on page 4). A general summary of the design is that the antenna and matching network were designed to match the output impedance of the CC2541 Bluetooth radio (70 ohm) with the antenna (which is 50 ohm at 2.45GHz) The maximum output power of the ASL-01 is 0dBm and the gain of the antenna is 3dBm +/-1dBm over the 2.45GHz ISM band. The IFA was designed to match an impedance of 50 ohm at 2.45 GHz. Thus no additional matching components are necessary. 4.1 Design Goals The reflection at the feed point of the antenna determines how much of the applied power is delivered to the antenna. A reflection of less than -10 dB across the 2.4 GHz ISM band, when connected to a 50 ohm source, was a design goal. Reflection of less than -10 dB, or VSWR less than 2, ensures that more than 90% of the available power is delivered to the antenna. Bandwidth is in this document defined as the frequency band where more than 90% of the available power is delivered to the antenna. Another design goal was to fit the size of the PCB antenna on a USB dongle and to obtain good performance also when the dongle is connected to a computer. 4.2 Simulation IE3D from Zeland, which is an electromagnetic simulation tool, was used to design the antenna. The accuracy of the simulation is controlled by the mesh. An increase of the mesh increases the simulation time. Thus, for initial simulations mesh = 1 should be used. When a fairly good result is achieved a higher mesh should be used to obtain more accurate results. Comparison of simulation and measurement results shows that the measured reflection is between the result obtained with mesh = 5 and mesh = 1; see Figure 2 for details. Figure 2: Com…
