INSTRUCTION MANUAL iM72VHF MARINE TRANSCEIVER This device complies with Part 15 of the FCCRules. Operation is subject to the condition thatthis device does not cause harmful interference. New2001 IC-M72_0.qxd 05.11.21 18:46 Page A (1,1) i New2001 SAFETY TRAINING INFORMATION Your Icom radio generates RF electromagnetic energy during transmit mode. This radio has been evaluated for compliance at the distanceof 2.5 cm with the FCC RF exposure limits for “OccupationalUse Only”. In addition, your Icom radio complies with the fol-lowing Standards and Guidelines with regard to RF energyand electromagnetic energy levels and evaluation of such lev-els for exposure to humans: • FCC OET Bulletin 65 Edition 97-01 Supplement C, Evaluating Compliance with FCC Guidelines for Human Exposure to Radio Frequency Electro-magnetic Fields. • American National Standards Institute (C95.1-1992), IEEE Standard for Safety Levels with Respect to Human Exposure to Radio Frequency Elec-tromagnetic Fields, 3 kHz to 300 GHz. • American National Standards Institute (C95.3-1992), IEEE Recommended Practice for the Measurement of Potentially Hazardous ElectromagneticFields– RF and Microwave. • The following accessories are authorized for use with this product. Use of accessories other than those specified may result in RF exposure levelsexceeding the FCC requirements for wireless RF exposure.; Belt Clip (MB-86, MB-103), Rechargeable Li-Ion Battery Pack (BP-245), Speaker-micro-phone (HM-125), Headset with headset adapter (HS-94, HS-95, HS-97with OPC-1392). To ensure that your expose to RF electromagnetic en- ergy is within the FCC allowable limits for occupationaluse, always adhere to the following guidelines: CAUTION WARNING • DO NOT operate the radio without a proper antenna attached, as this may damaged the radio and may to exceed FCC RF exposure limits. A properantenna is the antenna supplied with this radio by the manufacturer or anantenna specifically authorized by the manufacturer for use with this radio. • DO NOT transmit for more than 50% of total radio use time (“50% duty cycle”). Transmitting more than 50% of the time can cause FCC RF expo-sure compliance requirements to be exceeded. The radio is transmittingwhen the “TX indicator” lights. You can cause the radio to transmit bypressing the “PTT” switch. • ALWAYS keep the antenna at least 2.5 cm (1 inch) away from the body when transmitting and only use the Icom belt-clips which are listed onpage 33 when attaching the radio to your belt, etc., to ensure FCC RF ex-posure compliance requirements are not exceeded. To provide the recipi-ents of your transmission the best sound quality, hold the radio in analmost vertical position at least 5 cm (2 inches) from your mouth, the mi-crophone is located next to the speaker, so you should “talk into thespeaker”. The information listed above provides the user with the information needed tomake him or her aware of RF exposure, and what to do to assure that this radiooperates within FCC RF exposure limits. Electromagnetic Interference/CompatibilityDuring transmissions, your Icom radio generates RF energy that can possiblycause interference with other devices or systems. To avoid such interference, turn off the radio in areas where signs are posted to do so. DO NOT operate the transmitter in areas that are sensitive to electromagnetic radiation such ashospitals, aircraft, and blasting sites. IC-M72_0.qxd 05.11.21 18:46 Page i (1,1) ii New2001 IN CASE OF EMERGENCYIf your vessel requires assistance, contact other vessels andthe Coast Guard by sending a distress call on Channel 16. ❍ USING CHANNEL 16 DISTRESS CALL PROCEDURE1. “MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY.”2. “THIS IS ...........................” (name of vessel)3. Your call sign or other indication of the ves- sel. 4. “LOCATED AT .....................” (your position)5. The nature of the distress and assistance re- quired. 6. Any other information which might facilitate the rescue. RECOMMENDATIONCLEAN THE TRANSCEIVER THOROUGHLY WITH FRESHWATER after exposure to saltwater, and dry it before opera- tion. Otherwise, the transceiver’s keys, switches and con-trollers may become inoperable due to salt crystallization.DO NOT wash the transceiver in water if there is any reason to suspect the waterproofing may not be effective. For example, incases where the battery pack rubber seal is damaged, the trans-ceiver/battery pack is cracked or broken, or has been dropped,or when the battery pack is detached from the transceiver. IC-M72_0.qxd 05.11.21 18:46 Page ii (1,1) FOREWORDThank you for purchasing this Icom radio. The IC-M72 VHF MA - RINE TRANSCEIVER is designed and built with Icom’s state of the art technology and craftsmanship. With proper care this prod-uct should provide you with years of trouble-free operation. IMPORTANTREAD ALL INSTRUCTIONS carefully and com- pletely before using the transceiver. SAVE THIS INSTRUCTION MANUAL— This in- struction manual contains important operating instructions forthe IC-M72. EXPLICIT DEFINITIONS FEATURES Submersible construction Built tough to withstand the punishing marine environ-ment, the IC-M72’s submersible construction meets IPX8of the corresponding International Standard IEC 60529(2001) while using BP-245.In addition, the new speaker grill structure with the waterdraining function is helpful for draining water or seawatereasily. Dualwatch and tri-watch functions Convenient functions which allow you to monitor the dis-tress channel (Ch 16) while receiving one other channel of your choice (dualwatch) , or while receiving one other chan- nel of your choice and the call channel (Ch 09) (tri-watch) . See p. 16 for details. Large, easy-to-read LCD With dimensions of 22.5(H) × 31.5(W) mm; 7 ⁄ 8 (H) × 1 1 ⁄ 4 (W) inch, the IC-M72’s function display is easy to read andshows operating conditions at a glance. American Telecommunications Certification Body Inc. 6731 Whittier Ave, McLean, VA 22101 January 24, 2006 RE: FCC ID: AFJ290500_ATCB003120 Attention: Tri Luu I have a few comments on this Application. Please note that further comments may arise in response to answers provided to the questions below. 1. Please note that it is not clear from the mask plots if the overlay is accurate. Please note that at 156.025 center frequency and a 16kHz authorized bandwidth the 25dB down points for mask B should occur at 156.033MHz and 156.017MHz. Even accounting for the shift in center frequency the mask edges should be 156.0 326MHz and 156.0166MHz. All or some of the plots shown on pages 29 through 32 appear to calculate 25dB down points incorrectly (the plots on pages 33 to 36 have sufficient evidence of meeting the mask and should not be of concern). For example the lower point on page 29 should be 156.0166MHz but the mask shows 156.01557MHz or about 1kHz error. When the limit is projected onto the plot at the correct point of 156.0166MHz, the emissions appears to be right on the mask line or possibly outside the mask and thus possibly failing. The plot on page 30 appears to be worse and may appear to have the lower frequency outside the projected mask. Please explain how you derived the mask. Please also verify the mask and provide an emissions limit plot (or tabular data for the edge frequencies) that clearly shows compliance to the emissions mask. 2. Please note that the test report states that the max average conducted power measured is 5.75W. However, the rf exposure report states that the max peak conducted power measured is only 867mW. While the device does not need SAR, the data should be consistent throughout the documentation. Please explain the discrepancy.
