CN3 Mobile Computer User’s Manual - PRELIMINARY69 3 Configuring the Computer There are multiple ways to get an application to your CN3 Mobile Com- puter; like there are multiple ways to package the application for delivery. Note: Desktop icons and settings applet icons are shown to the left. Any place that Start is mentioned, tap the following Windows icon in the top, left corner of your CN3 desktop. Chapter 3 — Configuring the Computer 70PRELIMINARY - CN3 Mobile Computer User’s Manual Developing Applications for the Computer CN3Computers run applications programmed in Microsoft Visual Studios 2005. Use this chapter to understand what you need to develop a new application for the CN3 Computer. To develop applications for your CN3 Computer, use the Resource Kits in the Intermec Developer Library (IDL). Download the IDL from the Inter- mec web site at www.intermec.com/idl. Contact your Intermec representa- tive for more information. You need the following hardware and software components to use the resource kits: • Pentium desktop, 400 MHz or higher • Windows 2000 (Service Pack 2 or later) or Windows XP (Home, Profes- sional, or Server) • For native and managed development, Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 • 128 MB RAM (196 MB recommended) • 360 MB hard drive space for minimum installation (720 MB for com- plete) • CD-ROM drive compatible with multimedia desktop specification • VGA or higher-resolution monitor (Super VGA recommended) • Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device Packaging Applications for the CN3 Computer Use any of these methods to package applications for installation: • You could package an application as a cabinet (CAB) file. Recommended • For simple applications, the application itself may be the file to deliver. • It could be a directory structure that contains the application, supporting files like ActiveX controls, DLLs, images, sound files, and data files. Consider any of these when choosing a storage location for applications: • In the basic CN3 Computer, there are two built-in storage options: the Object Store and the Flash File Store. The Object Store is a Disk on Chip (DOC) Flash that looks like a disk. The Flash File Store is an area of storage which is embedded in a section of the system’s FLASH mem- ory. This storage area is not erased during a clean-boot. • If the optional Secure Digital storage card is in the system, then consider this card the primary location for placing an applications install files. This storage card creates the “\Storage Card” folder. Note: Microsoft eMbedded Visual C++ 4.0 may be used, but some features are not available. Chapter 3 — Configuring the Computer CN3 Mobile Computer User’s Manual - PRELIMINARY71 • Use the small nonvolatile Flash File Store region to hold CAB files that rebuild the system at clean-boot or install applications from a CAB file into the Flash File Store so they are “ready-to-run” when a clean-boot is performed. Since the FLASH in the system has a limited number of write cycles, do not use the Flash File Store for excessive writing pur- poses; however, reading is okay. Installing Applications on the Computer Any of these options can move items to locations on your CN3 Computer: Microsoft ActiveSync (page 71), Secure Digital storage cards (page 72), Wavelink Avalanche (page 72), or SmartSystems™ Console (page 73). Using Microsoft ActiveSync You can use Microsoft ActiveSync to establish a connection between your desktop and the CN3 Computer. Microsoft ActiveSync transfers files, syn- chronizes files, remote debugging, and other device management activities. See Chapter 2, “Windows Mobile” for information about the Microsoft ActiveSync application as provided by Microsoft Corporation. This can be a USB Microsoft ActiveSync connection. Files can be copied using Windows Explorer on a desktop or a laptop computer. This is usually good when updating few CN3 Computers. These instructions assume that Microsoft ActiveSync was installed onto your desktop and is up and running. If not, go to Chapter 2, “Windows Mobile” for an URL from which to download the latest application. 1Connect your CN3 Computer to your desktop using a USB cable. You may have to detach, then reattach the cable to “wake” the connection. 2Wait for a “Connected” message to appear in the Microsoft ActiveSync application to signal a connection to the CN3 Computer. If necessary, select File > Get Connected to initiate a connection or detach, then reat- tach the USB cable. 3Click Explore to access the “\Mobile Device” folder on your unit. Chapter 3 — Configuring the Computer 72PRELIMINARY - CN3 Mobile Computer User’s Manual 4From your desktop, select Start > Windows Explorer, then browse the “C:\Intermec\CN3 Mgmt Tools\CabFiles” path for any CAB files needed for your CN3 Computer. Select the appropriate file, right-click the file for a pop-up menu, then select Copy. 5Within the “\My Windows Mobile-Based Device” directory, go to the directory where you want the files located on the CN3 Computer, do a right-click for a pop-up menu, then select Paste. 6When all of the files are pasted, perform a clean-boot on the CN3 Com- puter. When the computer reboots, wait for the LED on the top left of your keypad to stop blinking. Tap Start > Programs > Windows Explorer to locate the newly copied executable files, then tap these files to activate their utilities. Using a Storage Card If you have a mini-Secure Digital (SD) storage card for your CN3 Com- puter, this is the best place for you to installation applications. 1If you are using a Secure Digital card reader, suspend the CN3 Com- puter, remove its mini-SD storage card, insert it in a mini-SD adapter card, then place it in the reader. For help, see “Using the Storage Card” on page 16. 2Copy your application file to the mini-SD card. If you are using Microsoft ActiveSync to copy the files to the mini-SD card, place the application in the “\Storage Card” folder on the CN3 Computer. 3If using a Secure Digital card re…

The radio, M/N: DHIB, operates in the 2400-2483.5MHz band as a Bluetooth radio and an 802.11(b)/(g) radio. The radio is seeking full modular approval and was tested in a stand-alone configuration. The radio utilizes a single type of antenna, one for the Bluetooth portion of the radio and one for the 802.11(b)/(g) portion of the radio. Intermec Technologies Corporation has provided antenna gain information over the 2400MHz frequency band. For final use, the antenna will be internal to the device it is installed in, thus satisfying the requirements of 47 CFR 15.203. The technical reports and exhibits demonstrate compliance of the Bluetooth portion of the radio with FCC rules 47 CFR 15.247 as a hybrid transmitter. In this section, it is stated as follows; The digital modulation operation of the hybrid system, with the frequency hopping turned off, shall comply with the power density requirements of paragraph (d) of this section. Should we apply to the above requirement even Bluetooth equipment ? RESPONSE: A bluetooth device may apply under the rules in 15.247 as either a Digital transmission system, a Frequency hopping system or a Hybrid system whichever provides an advantage to the grantee as long as all the requirements are met. Please note the following regarding the requirements for Hybrids and clarification of spread spectrum systems with regard to the recent changes to the spread spectrum rules. Prior to the recent changes to the spread spectrum rules, there were two major types of spread spectrum systems. They were direct sequence and frequency hopping spread spectrum ("FHSS") systems. These two distinct systems were required to comply with separate rule requirements. The new rules, however, allow manufacturers more flexibility and are not as limiting. The new rules provide more flexibility for manufacturers by eliminating the requirement to employ direct sequence modulation techniques along with its associated requirement to comply with a minimum processing gain. Instead, manufacturers now may employ wideband digital modulation under the new rules for Digital Transmissions Systems ("DTS"). It is possible for a device to be designed to operate as a DTS, as a FHSS system, or using a combination of these two modulation types. Because of this, we have received several requests for interpretations by manufacturers that wish to produce transmission systems that employ both frequency hopping (or channel changing) techniques using digitally modulated channels. We believe that such systems fall under three possible combinations of standards, depending on the exact methods of modulation. First example: We will allow a manufacturer of a combination DTS and FHSS system to demonstrate compliance with the rules required for DTS operation or for FHSS operation. There is no need to demonstrate compliance with both the FHSS standards and the DTS standards. Second example: Systems may employ two mutually exclusive operational modes. One mode would be as a FHSS system and the other would be as a DTS. For example, a device may be operated as a FHSS system while transmitting data and as a DTS while in the acquisition mode. When operating in this manner, the device must fully comply with the rules for a FHSS system when operating in that mode and as a DTS when operating in that mode. The two types of operation must be distinct so that each mode of operation can be distinguished and separately demonstrated to comply with the pertinent standards. Third example: The third method of authorizing a combination system is as a hybrid system under the provisions described in Section 15.247(f) of the rules. Prior to the new rules on DTS operation, a hybrid system consisted of a transmission system that employed a combination of both direct sequence and frequency hopping techniques. Such systems were required to show compliance with a 17 dB processing gain. This is no longer required since the processing gain requirement has been replaced by the DTS regulations. A hybrid system uses both digital modulation and frequency hopping techniques at the same time on the same carrier. This is similar to the combination DTS/FHSS system described above in the first example but the system is subject to slightly different standards. As indicated in Section 15.247(f), a hybrid system must comply with the power density standard of 8 dBm in any 3 kHz band when the frequency hopping function is turned off. The transmission also must comply with a 0.4 second/channel maximum dwell time when the hopping function is turned on. There is no requirement for this type of hybrid system to comply with the 500 kHz minimum bandwidth normally associated with a DTS transmission; and, there is no minimum number of hopping channels associated with this type of hybrid system. However, the hopping function must be a true hopping system, as described in Section 15.247(a)(1). The specific requirements in Section 15.247(a)(1) are: 1) A minimum channel separation. 2) Pseudorandom hop sequence. 3) Equal use of each frequency. 4) Receiver matching bandwidth and Synchronization. The radio meets the requirements for modular approval as detailed in FCC Public Notice DA00-1407. Compliance to each of the requirements is described below: 1. “The modular transmitter must have its own RF shielding.” The radio portion of the module is contained in its own RF shielding. The shielding is installed at the factory. Please see the Internal Photos and External Photos exhibit. 2. “The modular transmitter must have buffered modulation/data inputs.” The EUT has buffered data inputs to insure compliance with Part 15 requirements under conditions of excessive data rates or over-modulation. Please see the Schematics exhibit. 3. “The modular transmitter must have its own power supply regulation.” The EUT has its own power supply regulation to insure compliance with Part 15 requirements regardless of the quality or level of external DC supplying the module from the host unit. Please see Schematics exhibit. 4. “The modular transmitter must comply with the antenna requirements of Section 15.203 and 15.204(c).” The EUT meets the FCC antenna requirements. Please see Antenna information exhibit and internal photos exhibit. 5. “The modular transmitter must be tested in a stand-alone configuration.” The EUT was tested in a stand-alone configuration. The module was greater than 10 cm from the host device. Please see test setup photos exhibit and technical report exhibit. 6. “The modular transmitter must be labeled with its own FCC ID number.” The EUT is labeled with its own FCC ID number. Please see FCC ID label & location exhibit. Since the FCC ID number will not be visible when the module is installed in a host device, another label with the FCC ID will be applied to the exterior of the host device. 7. “The modular transmitter must comply with any specific rule or operating requirements applicable to the transmitter and the manufacturer must provide adequate instructions along with the module to explain any such requirements.” The EUT is compliant with all applicable FCC rules. Detail instructions for maintaining compliance will be given in all future host device User Manuals.
