Installing the Access Point Package Contents x Intel® PRO/Wireless 5000 LAN Access Point (model WSAP5000) x Mounting hardware x Power supply and power cord x CD-ROM containing software and online documentation x Quick Installation Guide (this manual) Installation Options and Requirements x (Recommended) To set up and configure the access point, use a wired client workstation connected to the access point directly or connected to the wired LAN to which the access point is connected. Initial setup and configuration must be done over a wired connection, but subsequent changes can be made over a wireless connection. x (Optional) Use DHCP server support for automatic assignment of an IP address to the access point over the wired network. You can configure the access point to use DHCP to get its IP address. See Using DHCP on page 8. 5 Connect and Power Up the Access Point Connect the Access Point to the Wired Network x Plug an RJ-45 Category 5 Ethernet cable into the RJ-45 connector on the access point and into a 10/100 Ethernet wall connector or hub. Connect the Access Point to an AC Power Source x Plug the power adapter into a wall outlet. x Plug the power adapter cable into the socket on the bottom of the access point. LED Indicators Once the access point is connected to a wired network and is powered on, check the LED indicators to verify that the unit is functioning correctly. If the access point fails to initialize, restart it by disconnecting and reconnecting power. x The "Ready" LED at the bottom of the row of LEDs should be lit. x If the access point is connected to a LAN through an Ethernet cable, the "Wired Link" LED should be lit (green for 10 Mbps, orange for 100 Mbps) and the "Wired network activity" LED should be blinking. x If the access point is communicating with a wireless adapter, the "Wireless radio activity" LED should be flashing. Viewed top to bottom, the LED indicators on the access point have the following functions. Wired link Green for 10 Mbps wired network speed, orange for 100 Mbps. Wired network activity Yellow blinking shows activity. Wireless radio association Green will be ON if a client is associated to the access point and OFF if not. Wireless radio activity Yellow flashes steadily if no adapter associated, and more rapidly when transferring data. Wireless radio association Future use. Wireless radio activity Future use. Ready Green. This indicator will stay illuminated after the access point has completed the initialization sequence. 6 Configuring the Access Point for the First Time 1. Set up a portable or desktop computer as a configuration workstation from which to view the browser-based Configuration Management System used to configure the access point. 2. Connect the configuration workstation to the access point either directly (using a crossover RJ-45 cable) or through a hub or switch (using a standard RJ-45 cable). 3. The configuration workstation must be running Microsoft Windows® XP, 2000, Me, or 98, and one of the following web browsers: Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.50 or Netscape Navigator version 4.78 or 5.x 4. Set up the configuration workstation initially with an IP address compatible with the default IP address and default subnet of the access point. For example, based on the access point default IP address 192.0.2.1 and default subnet 255.255.0.0, the client workstation could be set to 192.0.2.2, 192.0.2.3, or a similar address not in use by another device. 5. Once the workstation has been configured as just described, type the default access point IP address as a URL in the browser address field: http://192.0.2.1. 6. To access the Express Setup pages, type a user name and a password. The default for both is: Intel. The password is case-sensitive: capital "I," lower case "ntel." 7. Use Express Setup to configure the access point with a new IP address, subnet, and other settings suitable for the network to which it will be permanently connected (see table on page 7). 8. Click Apply first, then click Restart AP. After the access point has restarted, connect it to the required network. 9. Once the access point has been configured and connected to the network, the configuration interface can be viewed from any workstation on the same network segment or subnet. Overview Welcome to the Intel® PRO/Wireless 5000 LAN Adapter User's Guide. This guide covers software installation, configuration, and troubleshooting. Copyright © 2002 Intel Corporation. Legal Information Introduction to Wireless Networking The Intel® PRO/Wireless 5000 LAN Adapter is an Intel® PRO/Wireless 5000 LAN network product. Intel® PRO/Wireless 5000 LAN network products are based on the IEEE 802.11a standard and connect computers together to form a wireless network. Intel® PRO/Wireless 5000 LAN Adapters offer 54 Mbps data rates using clean spectrum 5 GHz transmissions. A Local Area Network (LAN) is a network in a central location. Users at that location share files, printers, and other services. In a LAN, a networked computers that request services are called clients, while servers in a LAN provide services. In a wireless LAN (WLAN), wireless adapters are installed in clients. A wireless client communicates with the WLAN without cables. Instead, wireless clients send and receive information through the air. A wireless client operates in either infrastructure mode or peer-to-peer mode. Infrastructure Mode: A WLAN with Access Points In infrastructure mode, wireless clients send and receive information through access points. When a wireless client communicates with another, it transmits to the access point. The access point receives the information and rebroadcasts it. Then the other device receives the information. Access points are strategically located within an area to provide optimal coverage for wireless clients. A large WLAN uses multiple access points to provide coverage over a wide area. Access points can connect to a LAN through a wired Ethernet connection. Access points send and receive information from the LAN through this wired connection. Peer-to-Peer Mode: A WLAN without Access Points In peer-to-peer mode, also called Ad Hoc Mode, wireless clients send and receive information to other wireless clients without using an access point. In contrast to infrastructure mode, this type of WLAN only contains wireless clients. You can use peer-to-peer mode to network computers in a home or small office, or to set up a temporary wireless network for a meeting. Identifying a WLAN All adapters and access points in a WLAN use a Network Name, or Service Set Identifier (SSID) to identify the WLAN. The SSID indicates what WLAN you are communicating with. Wireless Security Wireless networking devices transmit information through the air. Without implementing security, it is easy for an unauthorized person to intercept the information. A common way of implementing security and protecting information is encryption. Before sending information, the wireless client or access point encrypts or scrambles information using an encryption key. The device receiving the information uses the same key to decrypt or unscramble the information. The information is only readable to wireless devices that have the correct encryption key. 64-bit or 128-bit security The IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN standard specifies the Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) encryption and decryption algorithm. The standard includes two levels of security, using a 64-bit key or a 128-bit key. Some vendors refer to 64-bit encryption as 40-bit. These are identical. A wireless device that claims to have 64-bit encryption interoperates with a device that claims to have 40-bit encryption. To implement WEP , use either the 64-bit or 128-bit method. For better security, use a 128-bit key. A 128-bit key has several trillion times as many possible combinations as a 64-bit key. For added security, change your keys often. The same device, host computer or front-end processor usually performs both encryption and decryption. The algorithm, like the pattern of a lock, is standardized and may be used by anyone, but the encrypted data is unreadable without the appropriate key, which is known only by the sender and receiver of the transmitted data. Please provide the 5 GHz tissue simulant mixture parameters used for SAR testing. The tissue was formulated using the values as presented in "Supplement C" page 35. The dielectric values presented for 5.8 GHz and 3 GHz were used as the starting basis to calculate the epsilon and sigma "Target Values" for 5.24 GHz. These values were used to interpolate the target values for 5.24 GHz. Page 13 table 3 of the SAR report provides the values measured for the mixture used for this project. Stuart Nicol Director Product Develpoment 2. Please provide the 5 GHz probe calibration data. The probe was calibrated for sensitivity in air using a horn antenna, within an anechoic chamber (rated from 2 GHz to 28 GHz) using a predetermined process. The controlled environment was evaluated for reflections, and then set-up with the horn antenna transmitting at a specified amplitude at a frequency of 5.24 GHz. The amplitude of the signal from the horn antenna was then normalized so that the probe was detecting a 1 mW field. At this point measurements were then taken at each 10 degree increment for each sensor and then logged. From this the sensitivities were calculated and used during the thermal calibration. A dipole was manufactured using the parameters for 5.24 GHz while coupled to the tissue. A series of measurements were then made to determine the E-Slope vs. the T-Slope and the tissue enhancement factor was then calculated. Page 13 table 3 provides the conversion factor used for the measurements. Due to the additional research which was carried out by APREL Laboratories a number of proprietary elements were utilized for the Xircom project which APREL do not wish to be revealed to the public domain. Explain how the RF power and power spectral density were measured at the integrated antenna terminals, if so. If these were made by radiated method, provide the data. The power output was re-measured using the new provided procedure from Joe Dichoso. The Power Spectral Density was measured using the UNII procedure that was provided to all the TCB’s. Procedure and data for both power output and power density have been uploaded. All data was taken at the antenna terminal using the antenna-conducted method. Do to the new peak output power measurement, please change the 731 form to reflect the new power which will be 0.1 Watts max power from 5180 – 5320 MHz. Hopefully this answers all of your questions. Read this before installing your Intel® PRO/Wireless 5000 LAN Products Late-breaking News The following FCC Notices are additions to the printed Regulatory Notices provided with your product. FCC Notice This unit is a mobile device that uses radio transmissions to operate. Please keep it at least 20 cm from any persons during operation. In addition, it should not operate in the same location with any other antenna or radio transmitter. The Intel WCB5000 PRO/Wireless 5000 LAN CardBus Adapter has passed all necessary tests, and FCC applications are pending to classify the product as a portable device that can be operated in close proximity to the human body. WARNING To comply with the FCC and ANSI C95.1 RF exposure limits, it is recommended for the Access Point, or a PCI Adapter card, installed in a desktop computer, that the antenna for this device be installed to provide a separation distance of at least 20 cm from all persons and must not be co-located or operating in conjunction with any other antenna or radio transmitter. Installers and end-users must follow the installation instructions provided in this user guide. Radio Frequency Interference Requirements This device is restricted to indoor use due to its operation in the 5.15 to 5.25 GHz frequency range. FCC requires this product to be used indoors for the frequency range 5.15 to 5.25 GHz to reduce the potential for harmful interference to co-channel Mobile Satellite systems. High power radars are allocated as primary users of the 5.25 to 5.35 GHz and 5.65 to 5.85 GHz bands. These radar stations can cause interference with and /or damage this device. WARNING To comply with the FCC and ANSI C95.1 RF exposure limits, it is recommended when using a wireless device with an integrated antenna, for the CardBus Adapter inserted into a laptop computer that the antenna should not be positioned closer than 20 cm (8 inches) from your body or nearby persons for extended periods of time while it is transmitting (or operating). If the antenna is positioned less than 5 cm (two inches) from the user, it is recommended that the user limit exposure time.
