❹Connecting the leads on the car interface cable Caution Before connecting the car interface cable to the GEM, connect the leads first and follow the sequence below. Whether the vehicle ignition has an ACC position or not, connect: • Black lead ground (GND) to a clean unpainted metallic part of the vehicle. • Green lead (STEREO MUTE) to the audio system, if applicable. • Red lead to the positive terminal of the vehicle battery. • If the vehicle ignition has an ACC position, connect the yellow lead to the Power Sense ACC position. • If the vehicle ignition does not have an ACC position, connect the yellow lead to the ON position of the ignition (Power Sense). • Connect the microphone and speaker to the GEM. • Connect the ODU/Cradle pigtail cables together to connect the ODU to the cradle. • Connect the cellular antenna (not included). • Connect the cradle cable to the GEM. • Connect the data cable (not included) to the GEM. • Connect the optional privacy handset or privacy headset to the GEM. • Connect the car interface cable to the GEM. Caution Exceeding the following input voltage and current values causes the power fuse to open, and it will have to be replaced. Maximum input voltage is 16.0 volts. Maximum input current is 4000 mA. Serious injury could result. 6.The car kit is designed for vehicles with a negative ground 12 volt electrical system only. Other supply voltages or polar- ities could damage the equipment. 7.Use only the cables included in the car kit to connect the Outdoor Unit (ODU) to the cradle and only the supplied fuses for wiring. 8.After installation, check that the car interface cable and external antenna cable do not interfere with the operation of the car in any way. Make sure all of the cables operate properly. 9.After installation, make sure that all the components are secured and do not shift when the vehicle is moving or stopped. When connecting the leads on the car interface cable: 1.Make sure you do not drill through anything under the car. 2.Connect the red and then the yellow power input leads only after all other leads are connected. 3.Make firm connections. ❸ Where to install the components Note The installation of the car kit components may vary according to the make and model of the vehicle. It should be mounted on the roof of the vehicle with an unobstructed view of the sky. You can attach it to the roof of the vehicle using a magnet or a ski rack type mount, or permanently bolt it in place. Note Check with your service provider for available ODU mounting options. When you mount the ODU using a magnet, check the surface of the magnet before you put the ODU on the car. The ODU is not designed for high speed driving, so use moderate speeds if it is mounted on the roof. Be sure that the connector between GCK-12a and GCK-11a is inside the vehicle. Be sure to route the ODU cable through the weather strip without pinching it. Use only the ODU cables that come with the car kit when connecting the ODU and do not cut or modify the ODU cable. Caution It is not recommended that you mount the ODU on the trunk or a lower surface. Performance could be affected by the shadow effect of the car. Caution As discussed in the earlier section on exposure to radio frequency signals, when the ODU is transmitting, it is necessary that at least 25 cm (10 inches) line-of-sight separation distance be maintained between the ODU antenna and the people within or near the vehicle, above the horizon of the ODU antenna (above and to the side of the ODU). A 25 cm separation distance is not required below the ODU antenna horizon, inside the vehicle. Mounting the ODU at least 25 cm from the edge of the vehicle roof will satisfy the separation distance requirement under normal use conditions. Globalstar DRA ODU Car Kit MPE AnalysisJanuary 26, 2000 1 of 13 Analysis of Maximum Permissible Exposure from Globalstar Dielectric Resonator Antenna (DRA) Outdoor Unit Car Kit The purpose of this report is to analyze the non-ionizing electromagnetic (EM) radiation levels of the dielectric resonator antennas employed in Globalstar DRA Outdoor Unit (ODU) Car Kits (CK’s), operating as outside RF signal amplifiers and active remote antennas for portable user terminals (UT’s) located inside motor vehicles, and to compare the predicted levels with established maximum permissible exposure (MPE) levels, to determine the minimum permissible separation distance from those antennas. Within the United States, the governing regulations are those promulgated by the FCC in 47 CFR Ch. 1 (10-1-97 Edition) Part 1, Sections 1.1310 and 2.1091 [1] (unchanged from 10-1-96 Edition). Table 1 (B) in Section 1.1310 defines the MPE levels for domestic/uncontrolled exposure to RF radiation over the frequency range from 300 kHz to 100 GHz. The MPE limits are applicable to transmitting structures used at distances greater than 20 cm from the body and thus are appropriate for Car Kit ODU Antennas. The MPE requirements are a hybridization of those recommended by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in association with the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) in ANSI/IEEE C95.1-1992 [2] and of the earlier recommendations by the National Council on Radiation Protection (NCRP) in Chapter 17 of NCRP Report No. 86, 1986 [3]. These recommended exposure limits are also similar to those defined in the IRPA Guidelines on Protection Against Non-Ionizing Radiation, 1991 [4], which are reportedly in the process of being adopted in the European Union, as codified in European Pre- Standard ENV 59166-2, approved by CENELEC in 1994. This report uses the above standards to establish the minimum safe separation distance between radiating DRA ODU antenna structures and people in proximity to those antennas, during full-power Globalstar transmissions. In this report we’ve determined the power flux densities in the far field in free space, above a reflecting ground plane, and below the antenna Globalstar DRA ODU Car Kit MPE AnalysisJanuary 26, 2000 2 of 13 horizon, off the edge of a reflecting ground. These values may be used to determine the minimum safe distance from the antenna for US and International uncontrolled (general population) exposure environments. The analytical methodology employed is that defined in the FCC’s Office of Science and Technology Bulletin, No. 65, October 1985 [5]. For reference, Table 1 presents the maximum permissible exposure limits and averaging times for the above-described standards across the authorized transmission frequency band (1610-1621.35 MHz) for Globalstar user terminal (UT) antennas. As can be seen in the table, the IRPA limits represent the most severe limits in the Globalstar transmit band and subsequent discussions of limits and margins will be with respect to the IRPA limits, except where explicitly stated otherwise. It should be noted that although the effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP) value shown in the table is higher than that specified in the Globalstar Air Interface (GAI) Specification (Reference 6), it is none-the-less a value which could be encountered in operation, depending on the transmitter power amplifier (PA) and antenna gain calibration tolerance stackups. The value is conservative, as is appropriate for a safety analysis. Table 2. Typical DRA antenna gain values as a function of elevation angle are presented in Table 3. There is a peak gain variation of less than 0.5 dB across the UT transmit band, with the highest in-band gain at the upper band edge, 1626.5 MHz, and those are the gain values presented in Table 3 and used in the analysis. The antenna gain is strongly direction dependant and the gain toward the ground plane beneath the antenna is substantially less than the gain in all directions above the horizon.
