This chapter covers: OmniExpress overview TMCT Overview Getting help with OmniExpress OmniExpress overview OmniExpress is a two-way terrestrial communications and vehicle tracking system that links your vehicle to your dispatch center. You can maintain two-way contact with your company 24 hours a day. The major components of OmniExpress are illustrated below. Driver’s Guide to OmniExpress (EDU) 2QUALCOMM Proprietary OmniExpress Functions OmniExpress capabilities center around sending and receiving text messages and optional phone communication. You use the display unit to send either new messages or replies to messages received from your dispatcher. Messages are also created by a dispatcher and sent from the dispatch computer to your vehicle. These messaging functions give OmniTRACS several advantages: •Your company can send dispatch information directly to you in your vehicle. •You get detailed information about pickup or delivery changes sent directly to you, keeping you on the road. •Some messages may be received and sent automatically by your company’s computer, rather than your dispatcher, so you get information faster. •You can inform your company immediately of any problems you encounter on the road that might affect the delivery schedule (such as bad weather, heavy traffic, and breakdowns), so your company and your customers know the exact time each vehicle is expected to arrive at its destination. TMCT Overview The Terrestrial Mobile Communications Terminal consists of equipment installed on your vehicle as shown in Figure 1-1. Figure 1-1. This chapter covers: Using the Display Unit Using the View Status screens Using the Display Unit The display unit is your connection to OmniExpress. You use the keyboard to send and receive messages and to check the status of the unit. See Figure 2-1 for some of the keys you will use frequently. Display unit ➁ Message Waiting lights—these come on when you receive a new message. For important messages, the lights blink indicating that there is a more urgent message. The lights stay on until you read the message, then the unit automatically turns the message waiting lights off. There is one light on the front of the unit and another on the top. ➂ View Status key—the View Status screens provide information about your unit. For a description of the View Status screens, see “Using the View Status screens” on page 2-7. ➃ Backlight key—press to illuminate the keyboard and display screen in low light or after dark. The system provides two-way communications, automatic position reports, and collects and records powerful management data. Installation Overview The Terrestrial Communications Unit (TCU) mounts on the interior cabin wall, behind the driver’s seat approximately two feet above the floor. The Enhanced Display Unit (EDU) mounts on the interior cabin, usually on the dashboard. The Handset also mounts on the interior cabin dashboard. The TCU Antennae (GPS and PCS) are mounted on the truck’s exterior, typically on the front portion of the tractor roof.
