Users Manual

802CI User Manuel 2 Contents 1. Contents 2. Introduction 3. Wireless LAN Basics 4. Installation for Window 95 / 98 5. Troubleshooting 6. Technical specifications of 802CI 3 2. Introduction Thank you for purchasing your Wireless LAN, 802CI PC Card. This manual will assist you with the installation procedure. The package you have received should contain the following items: • 802CI PC Card • User manual • Diskette containing Wireless LAN Management utility and drivers Note: if anything is missing, please contact your vendor The diskette contains the drivers and the program; this is used for managing the 802CI card and establishing the wireless connection with your Local Area Network. 4 3. Wireless LAN Basics Wireless LAN (Local Area Networks) systems offer a great number of advantages over a traditional, wired system. Wireless LANs (WLANs) are more flexible, easier to setup and manage and often more cost effective than their wired equivalence. Using radio frequency (RF) technology. WLANs transmit and receive data over the air, minimizing the need for wired connections. Thus, WLANs combine data connectivity with user mobility, and, through simplified configuration, enable movable LANs. With wireless LANs, users can access shared information without looking for a place to plug in and network managers can set up or augment networks without installing or moving wires. Wireless LANs offer the following productivity, convenience and cost advantages over traditional wired networks. • Mobility – Wireless LAN systems can provide LAN users with access to real-time information anywhere in their organization. This mobility supports productivity and service opportunities not possible with wired networks. • Installation Speed and Simplicity – Installing a wireless LAN system can be fast and easy and can eliminate the need to pull cable through walls and ceilings. • Installation Flexibility – wireless technology allows the network to go where wires cannot go. • Reduced Cost-of-Ownership – While the initial investment required for wireless LAN hardware might be higher than the cost of wired LAN hardware, overall installation expenses and life-cycle costs will be significantly lower. Long- term cost benefits are greatest in dynamic environments requiring frequent moves, adds, and changes. • Scalability – Wireless LAN systems can be configured in a variety of topologies to meet the needs of specific applications and installations. Configurations are easily changed and range from peer-to-peer networks suitable for a small number of users to full infrastructure networks of thousands of users that allows roaming over a broad area. 5 4. Installation for Windows 95 / 98 The following section will assist you to installing wireless LAN Adapter successfully. You will first install software (driver) and then insert the 802CI wireless LAN card, and finally set the network properties to accommodate resource sharing and select the type of wireless network that you wish to install. Response to TCB questions Email dated 2/9/2001 Hi Alice, We have conducted our review of the application and the following issues need to be resolved before can proceed: 1. The bandwidth plot on page 9 of the test report is illegible. Please provide a higher resolution plot. Answer: New test report supplied 2. The ETS test on page 10 of the test report does not appear to measure the correct parameter. We need to know the total transmit power of the actual spread spectrum signal. Measurement of a sinusoid at the same frequency will not give us this result. Please provide measurement data for the actual spread spectrum output. Per 15.31(m) provide these measurements for three channels (high, middle, low). Answer: New test report supplied 3. Page 13 of the test report does not document compliance with the requirements on conducted spurious emissions. Please provide data which documents that the conducted spurious emissions are at least 20 dB below the carrier over the range of 30MHz to 24.5GHz. You will need to expand the measurement range and provide data at on the fundamental signal level observed. Answer: New test report supplied 4. The peak power density on page 16 is performed using an ETSI test method which does not appear to comply with the FCC requirements and does not appear to demonstrate compliance with the FCC requirements. Please provide data responsive to the FCC requirement that power be less than 8dBm in any 3kHz band (15.247(d)) using the FCC test methods attached. Answer: New test report supplied 5. Please confirm that the LISN used for line conducted measurements was a 50 Ohm/50uH unit. Answer: New test report supplied 6. The readings shown on page 23 of the test report fail the FCC limits of 15.209. The corrected limit at 10 meters at 442MHz and 344 MHz is 35.5dBuV/m. The data shows 35.8dBuV/m which fails by 0.2dB. As notes to the table indicate that these emissions were believed to be sourced by the laptop, we suggest that you retest your unit in a compliant laptop and submit data which documents compliance. Operational Description

1 Method of Operation The 802CI products are self contained 2.4Ghz ISM Band Radios. These radios are designed to operate using the 802.11B Wireless LAN Standard for use in Wireless Networking systems. The Radio consists of 5 Major IC’s (HFA3983, HFA3683, HFA3783, HFA3683, and HFA3841) in the radio section and 3 other support IC’s and it operates in a Half-Duplex mode using the CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Avoidance) principle. The radio card interfaces to the PC via a PCMCIA interface. Receive Path The receive signal traveling through the air is received by one of the dual diversity antennas. The circuit will switch to the antenna which provides the best reception and strongest signal power. The RF signal then feeds into the 85MHz BW filter and through the Transmit/Receive switch. Then the signal is amplified using the LNA within the HFA3683 and mixed-down to an IF frequency of 374 MHz. The PLL and Synthesizer in the HFA3683 selects the Channel frequency for operation using Low Side Injection. The output of the Mixer in the HFA3683 is shared with the transmit path using a switch. The signal then flows through a image rejection SAW filter which has a 3db bandwidth of 17Mhz. The signal then flows into the HFA3783 Quad IF Downconverter IC, through a two stage Analog AGC circuit which adjusts the gain to compensate for signal gain differences. The output of the Twin AGC’s provide a constant signal level to the I and Q Conversion/Downconversion mixers, which convert both the I & Q signals to Baseband. A second Frequency Synthesizer feeds the Twin I & Q mixers with the same frequency signal that is phase shifted by 90 degrees. The output of the twin I & Q mixers then flows into a Dual Active 5 th Order Butterworth filter to remove the anti- aliasing components and Images from the down- converted signal. The twin I & Q signals then flow into the HFA3863 Baseband processor and are converted into digital signals via the dual A/D converters then flow through the digital AGC followed by the Digital Demodulator. The output of the digital demodulator is sent into a I/O interface of the HFA3841 MAC(Media Access Controller). The Received signal then flows into the Phy I/O interface and into the MAC protocol engine. The HFA3841 MAC converts the signal protocol from 802.11B to 802.3 Ethernet then passes that data through the HOST I/O PCMCIA interface to the PC. The transmit signal path is as follows; Transmit Path The Ethernet data passes from the PC to the HFA3841 MAC, to the Host I/O interface through the PC CARD. The signal then flows into the Data router where it is converted from the Ethernet to 802.11B protocol. After the signal is converted, a radio preamble and Header is added to the signal and passed to the radio I/O. There is also support circuitry for WEP encryption and the outboard SRAM and flash ROM, which contains the firmware which controls the radio. The signal then flows from the HFA4841 into the HFA3783 as both I & Q signals into the dual Up conversion mixers. Then, the signal upconverts to a IF frequency of 374 MHz and passes into a variable gain amplifier. Next, it passes through the Switched Shared SAW filter into the HFA3683 and then upconverts to a RF frequency from 2.4GHz to 2.485 GHz, depending on the channel selection. The signal then flows through a external Image reject filter, pre-amplifier, and then through a second Pulse shaping filter into the HFA3983 Power amplifier. The output of the power amplifier is then feed through the Transmit/Receive switch, then through bandpass filter with a pass bandwidth of 85MHz, then finally through the strongest signal selected antenna.

FCC ID #: LNQ-802CI Test Report #: ACT-0008-2667-FCC Prepared for ActionTec Electronics, Inc. Prepared by EMC Compliance Management GroupPage 29 of 74 Method of Measurement The jamming margin method was used to generate this test report. A signal generator was stepped in 50kHz increments across the pass band of the system. At each point, the level of the signal generator required to produce the recommended Bit Error Rate (BER) was recorded. This level is the jammer level (TX Power). The output power of the transmitter was also recorded at these same points (SG Power). This level is the signal level. The jammer to signal ratio (J/S) was then calculated. The worst 20% of the J/S data points were discarded. The lowest remaining J/S ratio was used to calculate the processing gain for each of the channels investigated. The processing gain, “GP”, was calculated as follows: GP = (S/N)o + MJ + L(sys), Where GP = the processing gain of the system, (S/N)o = signal to noise ratio required for the chosen BER, MJ = J/S ratio, L(sys) = system losses. (Note that total system losses in a system, including intentional radiator and receiver, are assumed to be no more than 2dB as specified by the FCC) An ideal signal to noise ratio, also referred to as (S/N)o or (Es/No), of 16.4dB was used as specified by Intersil when calculating the processing gain when operating at 11Mbps. The ActionTec 802CI contains chipset from Intersil and operates at 11Mbps. The use of 8% FER frame error rate (or PER packet error rate) as a substitute for the recommended BER bit error rate is derived in the document “Testing for compliance with FCC rules 15-247e” by Carl Andren of Intersil Corporation.
