It provides the distance between the flange and the measuring mediumís surface, as well as the distances of fixed targets. These may be directly used and transferred to the fix distance list. 4.2.3.9: Auto False Echo Suppression (F = use) Learns and records the current signal up to the suppression distance setting. These signals are then ignored during operation. The selection controls the display of Parameter 4.2.5.8. The possibilities of each parameter are listed below. For the values associated with Parameter 4.2.5.8: Calculate, go to page 43. 4.2.5.8: Calibrate/table If your vessel deviates from the forms offered, the necessary data is not available or is unknown or you need a vessel characteristic with greater accuracy you must calibrate it by liters. You can enter reference values from a table provided by the vessel manufacturer or do the calibration manually and enter the determined reference values. You can only enter pairs of values consisting of level and volume. It can be done more quickly and comfortably with the SIMATIC PDM software. Enter the appropriate volume (determined by manual calibration). If you access this parameter, first the currently measured level is displayed. Accept it by pressing . Enter the appropriate volume, save it by pressing or reject it by pressing . Then the device displays the ìCalibrateî selection again. Access again (press ) to select a further reference value. The device automatically offers you the next undefined reference value. It is recommended to enter a maximum of two or three reference values for the linear range of the vessel and to use the others for the non-linear portion If you enter a second volume value for the same level, the reference value saved earlier is overwritten. 4.2.5.8.2: Enter table Manual entry of a table Here you can enter up to 50 reference values provided by the vessel manufacturer in any order. The first reference value is offered when you access the parameter. Enter the level as a distance from the floor of the vessel in the units selected according to parameter 4.1.1 (parameter ìEnter levelî and the volume corresponding to the level (parameter ìEnter volumeî). The device then displays the selection ìEnter tableî again. Access again to enter a further reference value. The device automatically offers you the next undefined reference value. It is recommendable to enter a maximum of two or three reference values for the linear range of the vessel and to use the others for the non-linear part. If you enter a second volume value for the same level, the reference value saved earlier is overwritten. Carefully selected components and compliance with prescribed quality standards guarantee the high reliability of the SITRANS LR 400. In the unlikely event of a fault, please consult the instructions in this chapter before contacting the responsible customer services. Classification of faults Faults occurring in the SITRANS LR 400 can be classified in the following groups: ïfaults caused by ambient influences: over and undertemperature, moisture, contamination by the measuring medium and other substances, mains faults, vibration ïfaults in the device: display, electronics, mechanics, connections Please try to determine the fault and localize it as accurately as possible.. If the fault cannot be eliminated with the measures described, follow the instructions in ìMaintenance and repairsî on page 65. Self-test If you get fault messages after the self-test, please proceed according to ìFault messagesî on page 64. If there is a malfunction in the device, you can also activate the self-test manually with Parameter 3.2.1. Note: The device performs a self-test every time it is switched on. Replace the device fuse if necessary (see ìChanging the device fuseî on page 65). LCD is defective Connect a HART Communicator or a PC/Laptop with SIMATIC PDM software. If the device can be parameterized from there, the LCD is defective. Electronics are defective Measure the analog current output. If the output current is not between 3.6 mA < x < 22 mA, the electronics are defective. Replace the electronics unit as described in ìMaintenance and repairsî on page 65. Operational Description

Siemens Milltronics Sitrans LR 400 Technical Description, 5 September 2001 1. Introduction Siemens Milltronics Sitrans LR 400 is intended for use in process industries for the determination of material level in tanks and other process vessels. The principle used is Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW). A microwave frequency is generated whose frequency varies with time. This signal is directed towards the target. The signal is reflected by the target and received by the antenna. The time of flight of the pulse, Ï„ is calculated by comparing the transmitted and received frequencies for a given sweep rate. 2. Technical Description Refer to the block diagram shown on Siemens-Milltronics drawing 20150176 sheet 3. The sweep frequency is obtained by mixing the output of the 2.4 GHz Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) with the 22.4 GHz Local Oscillator (LO). VCO is also applied directly to a saw-wave reference (OFW) to obtain the reference signal REF which can be used to maintain the accuracy of the device over temperature. The sweep (frequency sum of LO and VCO) is applied to the antenna via a splitter. The received signal is then mixed with the transmitted signal to obtain the measured signal MESS (difference frequency). Since in a real measuring system multiple targets exist, the measurement signal will not be a single frequency but will be a combination of many frequencies representing the different targets. Digital Signal Processing techniques are used to extract the frequencies present in the measured signal and to reject false targets to select the correct target and calculate the target distance.

Operational Description

SITRANS LR Microwave Level Meter Application, mode of operation Siemens Catalog Extract FI 01 1 Application The SITRANS LR radar level meter is used to measure the level of liquids and bulk materials. The measuring principle is largely independent of temperature and pressure. The device calcu- lates the filling volume following input of the tank design; the mass can also be displayed if the density of the material is entered in addition. The main applications of the SITRANS LR are found in: 7Chemical industry 7Petrochemical industry 7Pharmaceutical industry 7Power engineering. Versions with the following types of protection are available for use in potentially explosive atmospheres (in preparation): 7II 2G EEx dem [ib] IIC T6, 7II 2G EEx d IIC T6 and 7the above types of protection with Ex zone 0 approval. SITRANS LR is characterized by the following features: 7Level measurement independent of medium permits a wide range of application. 7Minimum maintenance requirements and wear as result of non-contact measurement. 7High long-term stability resulting from self-calibration since the device has a highly stable internal reference. 7High measuring accuracy and repeatability due to 24-GHz technology. 7Nominal diameters from DN 50 to DN 150, or according to customer requirements. 7Antenna extension available for long mounting glands and high temperatures. 7Antenna and flange made of stainless steel or according to customer requirements. 7Modular design. 7Double chamber housing, i.e. separate junction box and elec- tronics area. 7EMC-tested to EN 50 081, EN 50 082 and NAMUR. 7Self-monitoring and diagnosis of all device functions. 7Analog output (4 to 20 mA) and digital output for limits or device status. 7Outputs electrically isolated from the power supply and from one another. 7HART communication. 7Simple menu-based operation with two-line display and four optical input elements; the device can be operated from the outside without opening the housing. Mode of operation Microwaves propagate in gases at the speed of light. The device transmits microwave signals from the container cover/gland to the surface of the medium and measures the runtime required for the signal to return to the device. The device has an antenna to generate a directional effect for the microwaves. The horn antennae have a very good directional effect and can be used with a gland diameter of 80 mm or more. A rod antenna made of Teflon is in preparation for more limited mounting conditions. The frequency modulated continuous wave procedure (FMCW) used transmits a linear, frequency-modulated radar signal. Fig. 1SITRANS LR microwave level meter, nominal diameter DN 100 Fig. 2Measuring principle The offset frequency of the signal reflected from the surface of the medium is dependent on the runtime and results in an offset in the phase or frequency between the transmitted and received signals. The resulting signal is sinusoidal with a frequency in the kHz range. This frequency is proportional to the distance from the surface of the medium. Using a Fourier transformation, the measured signal is converted into an echo profile (see Fig. 2).
