ORION 5825 – SR Technical Description 1 SCOPE This document describes the functional behavior of the Orion 5825 – SR and specifies the equipment and configuration associated with the radio. 2 ACRONYMS OU Outdoor Unit 3 FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION The Orion 5825–SR, referred to as the radio in the document, consists of an Outdoor Unit (Orion 5850) and antenna. Orion 5850 outdoor unit The OU is a configurable RF transceiver for which different transmission parameters can be selected depending on data throughput and transmission distance requirements. The OU operates as a full duplex transceiver that runs in continues transmission mode. Thus, a set OUs provides a fixed rate full duplex data path. This full duplex path between OUs is maintained at all times and can be utilized by according to their data transfer requirements. This implies that the transmitted RF spectrum for a given OU configuration is independent of the type or volume of data received. When no user data is available for transmission over the RF link, the OU modulator will transmit β€œdummy” data over the link, thereby preventing transmission gaps that would influence the transmitted RF spectrum of the radio.

MDR2400-SR, MDR5800-SR and Orion 5825-SR Issue 10 Page 3 FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION NOTICE The equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A digital devices, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference when the equipment is operated in a commercial environment. This equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instruction manual, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. Operation of this equipment in a residential area is likely to cause harmful interference in which case the user will be required to correct the interference at his own expense. The manufacturer is not responsible for any radio or TV interference caused by unauthorized modifications to this equipment. Such modifications could void the user's authority to operate the equipment. This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: (1) this device may not cause interference, and (2) this device must accept any interference, including interference that may cause undesired operation of the device. WARNING- To comply with FCC RF exposure limits, the antennas for this transmitter must be fix-mounted to provide a separation distance of 2 meters (6.6 ft) or more from all persons to satisfy RF exposure requirements. Equipment installation and use This equipment must be professionally installed. The operator of the spread spectrum or digitally modulated intentional radiator, or the installer if the equipment is professionally installed, is responsible for ensuring that the system is used exclusively for fixed, point-to-point operations. NOTE 1 The MDR2400 frequency output must be limited to between 2412MHz and 2458MHz and the power to a maximum of +22dBm (2412-2426MHz) and +18dBm (2458MHz) for the required antennas for compliance to FCC standards, U.S. only. NOTE 2 The center frequencies of the ORION5850 radio is limited by firmware between 5731MHz and 5844MHz as outlined in Sections 2.2.1.4 and 2.2.1.5 and the transmit power is limited to +24dBm. The device must be used with one of the antennas listed below to comply with FCC standards: 1) Gabriel Electronics parabolic antenna, model number SSP2-52B 2) Harris Corporation flat panel antenna, model number MT-20004. INDUSTRY CANADA NOTICE This device has been designed to operate with an antenna having a maximum gain of 33 dBi. Antenna having a higher gain is strictly prohibited per regulations of Industry Canada. The required antenna impedance is 50 ohms. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: (1) this device may not cause interference, and (2) this device must accept any interference, including interference that may cause undesired operation of the device. FCC ID: ONJ-3ECJ68A4D I have a few comments on the above referenced Application. 1) The following internal photographs must be provided a) Top and Bottom photographs of the PSU/TCXO with the shields removed b) Bottom view of the amplifier board c) Bottom View of the RX board d) Bottom View of the TX/Synth Board Response: Please refer to the revised Internal Photograph exhibit uploaded with this response. 2) For the data given in section 3 of the report, please provide information such as test distance used. Response: Please refer to the revised test report uploaded with this response. 3) For the data given in section 5 of the report, please provide information such as test distance and RBW/VBW settings. Additionally, this test actually falls under 15.109 and should also be defined as Class A or Class B as appropriate, not to 15.209 as given in the test report. Note that the user manual defines the receiver/digital device emissions as Class A. The test report states the testing was performed to 15.209, which does not classify the limits as Class A or Class B, although the limits are equivalent to Class B levels. Response: Please refer to the revised test report uploaded with this response. 4) Unless further information can be provided regarding the devices power source, it is assumed it may derive its power from and AC/DC adapter or through other host equipment. In most cases compliance with AC conducted power is required. As long as a path exists from the device to the AC power lines in any installation, even if power is achieved through another device (reference 15.207(d)) AC conducted emissions should be tested. Please either provide test data or further explanation. Note that the users manual mentions possible use of 120 VAC as an option. Response: Please refer to the revised test report uploaded with this response. 5) For the data given in section 6 of the report, please provide information such as test distance and RBW/VBW settings. Response: Please refer to the revised test report uploaded with this response. 6) The EUT appears to use standard connectors and the users manual discusses professional installation. Therefore, please provide a cover letter justifying professional installation. The letter should cover the following 3 items: a) Marketing The device cannot be sold retail,to the general public or by mail order. It must be sold to dealers. b) Requires professional installation; - installation must be controlled - installed by licensed professionals ( EUT sold to dealer who hire installers) - installation requires special training ( special programming, access to keypad, field strength measurements made) What is unique, sophisticated, complex, or specialized about your equipment which REQUIRES it to be installed by a professional installer? c) Application -The intended use is generally not for the general public. It is generally for industry/commercial use. However the tests were performed with shielded Ethernet cables and therefore this must be specified in the manual, not recommended as given on page 65. Please explain how FCC compliance can be assured. Additionally, if variable bandwidth settings and channel plans are possible as given in the manual, additional compliance data would be necessary for channel bandedges, output power, and spectral density tests. Please provide further information as necessary. Also note the additional information regarding modulator types as given on page 19 as variable modulator types could be an issue as well. FCC ID: ONJ-3ECJ68A4D I have a few comments on the above referenced Application. 1) The new AC Line Conducted test data provided in the test report appears to have been tested to the new limits as given in the results and procedure. However, part of the procedure mentions the use of a 400 kHz high pass filter. This would affect any results falling between 150 kHz and 450 kHz. Please comment and/or provide new test data as necessary. RTL Response : Please refer to the revised test report uploaded with this response. 2) The procedure in Section 4.2 for the AC Line Conducted appears to mention the use of the FCC "13 dB rule". When using the new CISPR limits both the QP and AVG limit apply and the "13 dB rule" is no longer applicable. Please explain. RTL Response : Please refer to the revised test report uploaded with this response. 3) For the data given in section 5 of the report, please provide information such as test distance and RBW/VBW settings, EUT to antenna distance, etc. used during testing. RTL Response : Please refer to the revised test report uploaded with this response. 4) For the data given in section 6 of the report, please provide information regarding the RBW/VBW settings used for the peak and average detectors. RTL Response : Please refer to the revised test report uploaded with this response. 5) Please provide lowest and highest tunable center frequencies for the frequency range specified on the 731 form. It appears from the users manual that AL and CH may be the lowest and highest channels, but this can not adequately be verified. Please confirm and correct the 731 form. RTL Response : Please refer to the revised 731 form, test report and user’s manual uploaded with this response. 6) Information in the users manual is confusing since the Orion 5825-SR is not mentioned in certain portions of the manual. For instance sections 2.2.1.4 and 2.2.1.5 only mention the Orion 5850. During the review, it has been assumed that the information labeled with 5850 applies to the 5825. Please explain. RTL Response : The EUT model name has been clarified as Orion 5850. Please refer to the revised user’s manual and test report uploaded with this response. It was assumed during the original review of this application that the output power was set to maximum. Additionally, during the test the cable between the unit and antenna appears to be about 1 meter. Please provide further information regarding the reduction of power referenced by the manufacturer. NOTE: It is assumed that if the power was set to maximum and met the FCC regulations with the cable between the unit and antenna as short as normally possible, that no further power reduction is required during installation. Likewise if power was reduced during testing because of the short cable length, further testing will likely be required since the FCC requires the maximum power to be tested. It uses a standard N-type connector at the antenna port. It is the duty of the installer to ensure that the radio complies with all the relevant FCC regulations. This is clearly stipulated in the manual. The radios are not sold to the general public. Tellumat has a network of dealers and distributors that sells the radios in the USA. All of the dealers and distributors have been trained to install the radios. According to the distributors agreement between Tellumat and the distributors the distributors in turn are required to train their resellers and must themselves regularly attend training sessions offered by Tellumat. A professional installer is required perform installation of the device according to the procedures set out in the user manual to ensure that the FCC requirements with regards to transmitted frequency and power levels are met. The professional installer remains liable to ensure that the complete installation does adhere to FCC requirements with regards to transmitted frequency and power levels. Firmware in the radio module of the device prevents the operator from setting the center frequency of the radio outside the range of 5731 to 5844 MHz and the conducted power level directly at the output of the ORION5850 greater than 24dBm. This device is intended for industrial and commercial use. The device could typically be used in one of the following applications: Typical application Environment User Cellular/PCS Backhaul. However a) The report section 2.1 does not appear to list the proper frequency 5844 for the slower data rate of 8,464 kps b) Section 3.1 states data shown is for worse case 25,392 kps data rate, but frequencies on the plots match the 8,464 kps data rate. Please correct the plots or section 3.1 as appropriate. 2) Section 5.3 states that the RBW/VBW was set to 1 MHz which is normally applied only to frequencies > 1 GHz. All the measurements shown here are < 1 GHz. Please confirm or correct section 5.3 as appropriate. 3) FYI....The users manual is still confusing. You will note that 5850 and 5825 appear throughout the manual. For instance, 5825 appears in the headers, introduction, issue status, etc. There is nothing to solidify that they are the same unit.
