By using the WindConnect, you can conveniently print from laptop computers and other devices without using a cable, as shown in the diagram below. This manual covers installation of the WindConnect for use with laptop computers that have a TROY, IBM ® or Toshiba BluetoothPCMCIA card. The WindConnect BluetoothPrint Adapter can also be used with other Bluetoothenabled devices, pro- vided that they support the BluetoothSerial Port Profile, the LAN Access Profile, or the Object Push Profile. Installation of these other types of devices is described in Chapter 3 of this manual Printer with TROY WindConnect BluetoothPrint Adapter Laptop computer with IBM or Toshiba BluetoothPCMCIA adapter Bluetooth wireless communications link Note: The WindConnect BluetoothPrint Adapter is designed for printing text and low-resolution graphics. Because of the speed limitations of the Bluetooth wireless communications link, you should not use the WindConnect to print high resolution graphics or photographs. To get better printing performance with Bluetooth, you might want to consult your printer’s user guide. Troy WindConnect I Device Description The WindConnect I (WC I) is a BlueTooth™ print-server allow users of laptops, PDA’s, cell-phones, and other device to print wirelessly using spread spectrum technology. The device utilizes 80 channels in a frequency hopping scheme from 2402MHz to 2480MHz, and with its printed circuit antenna, transmits a maximum power of 0dBm (1 milliwatt) using Gaussian Frequency Shift Keying (GPSK). It has a useful range of approximately 30ft. w hich is classified as a BlueTooth™ class 3 device. The WC I is powered by common 5 Volt DC wall adapter transformers supplying 400mA or more and is capable of being powered directly form the Centronics type parallel interface on many types of printers. The WC I is a “dongle” type device and is designed to plug directly to the parallel connector on many printers. It also has the capability of BlueTooth™ enabling many serial accessories via an RS-232 interface supplied as an RJ45 connector. The major components of the WindConnect I are a Motorola MC68LC302 microcontroller, a high speed parallel port host interface chip, 1 Mbyte SRAM, 1 Mbyte field upgradable FLASH memory, a Texas Instruments BlueTooth™ baseband-controller, and a Texas Instruments BlueTooth™ radio-modem IC, and a printed circuit antenna. Communicate Without Cables! The TROY WindConnect enables Bluetoothwireless communications capabilities on printers and other devices. By using the WindConnect, users with Bluetoothenabled laptop computers can send jobs to a printer without connecting a cable to their computer. Although the WindConnect is especially well-suited for wireless printing, it can also be used for general-purpose wireless cable replacement applications. The WindConnect is a small box that can plug directly into the parallel port of the printer for maximum compactness. It also includes a serial interface for connecting RS-232- compatible devices over a Bluetoothwireless communications link, so it can operate with a wide range of different kinds of devices and applications. If the printer provides 300mA@+5V on pin 18 of the parallel port, the WindConnect can be used without an external power supply. The WindConnect is simple to use. It supports the Service Discovery Protocol (SDP) to allow the receiving device to be discovered by any sending device that supports the SDP protocol. It can operate in any of the following modes: • Serial Port Profile (Cable Replacement).This mode allows devices that support the BluetoothSerial Port Profile to send data wirelessly to an RS-232 serial or IEEE 1284 parallel device. The data is passed unmodified to the receiving device. In this mode, the sending and receiving devices look to the software as though they are communicating via a hardwired RS-232 connection. Therefore, the WindConnect can be used with any printer that supports printing over the serial port (although the actual physical connection between the PAD II and the printer can be parallel, the sending device thinks it is communicating to a serial device). With Windows systems, this means that standard printer drivers like the HP LaserJet 5 driver can be used, so no special software needs to be installed on the PC. In addition to printing, the WindConnect can be used with a variety of other applications that require serial port connectivity (modem controls are not supported except for flow control). • Object Push Printing Mode.This mode allows cellular telephones and other devices that support printing using the BluetoothObject Push Profile to send vObjects wirelessly to an RS-232 serial or IEEE 1284 parallel printer. The WindConnect translates the vObject into ASCII data so that it can be printed out on most popular types of printers. Requirement Hybrid systems that employ a combination of both direct sequence and frequency hopping modulation techniques shall achieve a processing gain of at least 17 dB from the combined techniques. Measurement method De-spreading is accomplished by correlating the received bit stream with the bit pattern of the access code. Then with the value of the correlator output will be decided if the access code is valid or not. That means if the access code is not valid a “bit error” occurs for the Bluetooth device. For this reason, the ratio of invalid access codes (IACR) is used instead of the BER, in CW jamming margin method. Another reason to use this criterion is the fact, that the Bluetooth technology uses the access code to find the correct sampling point. That means if the access code cannot be found, all other bits in the transmission cannot be sampled successfully. In this case the Packet Error Rate (PER), which is similar to the Access Code Error Rate, was used. As limit a PER of 0.1% was chosen. The test was performed in the Bluetooth test mode loop back. System losses In the formula for calculation of the processing gain the term ‘system losses’ appear. In Bluetooth, there are two major causes for the system loss: 1. The non-optimal sampling time. The CW jamming method assumes that the optimal sampling time has been determined before. In fact it will be determined via the access code. If a Packet is not accepted (PER) the access code is not valid. 2. Losses due to attenuation in the RF part. Although this two points produce a system loss (Lsys) which will be much greater than 2 dB, we calculated with this value, because this is the maximum that will be accepted by FCC. The measurement was performed at the RF input (temporary antenna connector) of the device under test. The level of the wanted signal was set for all single measurements to –50 dBm. The noise level was adjusted until the PER reached 0.1% (noise level: –71,3 dBm). With this measurement configuration, the S/N ratio was 21.3 dB Jammer/Signal Measurement (JSR) The jammer signal was stepped in 50 kHz steps over the receiving channel. For every step the jammer level was adjusted until the PER was 0.1 %. The ratio between wanted signal power and the jammer power at the RF input of the device is the required Jammer to Signal ratio. With this measurement configuration the JSR has the following results: Disregarding the marked data points (-350, -400, -450, 500 kHz) the worst data point is at 300 kHz offset with a JSR value of –18 dB.
