Thank you for choosing the Mobile Broadband USB Stick. With your USB Stick, you can access a wireless network at high speed. Note: This manual describes the appearance of the USB Stick, as well as the procedures for preparation, installation, and removal. For operation details about the management program, see the online help included in the management program. Getting to Know Your USB Stick The following figure shows the appearance of the USB Stick. Indicator It indicates the status of the USB Stick. Green, blinking twice every 3s: The USB Stick is powered on. Green, blinking once every 3s: The USB Stick is registering with a 2G network. Blue, blinking once every 3s: The USB Stick is registering with a 3G/3G+ network. Green, solid: The USB Stick is connected to a 2G network. Blue, solid: The USB Stick is connected to a 3G network. Cyan, solid: The USB Stick is connected to a 3G+ network. Off: The USB Stick is removed. R F Output Pow er Port It connects an RF cable to the USB Stick for RF tests. MicroS D Card S lot It holds a microSD card. S IM /US IM Card S lot It holds a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) /Universal Subscriber Identity Module (USIM) card. Getting Your USB Stick Ready 1. Slide the back cover to remove it from the USB Stick. 2. Insert the SIM/USIM card and the microSD card into the corresponding card slots, as shown in the following figure. 3. Replace the back cover and slide it into place. Note: The microSD card is an optional accessory. If it is not provided in the package, you can buy one yourself. Ensure that the beveled edge of the SIM/USIM card is properly aligned with that of the SIM/USIM card slot and the microSD card is inserted according to the direction as labeled on the microSD card slot. Do not remove the microSD or SIM/USIM card when the card is in use. Otherwise, the card as well as your USB Stick may get damaged and the data stored on the card may be corrupted. Installation/Removal Guide The procedure for installing the management program depends on the operating system (OS) installed on your PC. The following sections take Windows XP as an example. Connecting the US B Stick to a PC Plug the USB Stick into the USB port of your PC. Installing the US B Stick M anagem ent P rogram 1. Connect the USB Stick with the PC. 2. The OS automatically detects and recognizes the new hardware and starts the installation wizard. Note: If the auto-run program does not respond, find the AutoRun.exe file in the driver path. Then double-click AutoRun.exe to run the program. 3. Follow the on-screen instructions of the installation wizard. 4. After the program is installed, a shortcut icon for the management program appears on the desktop. Starting the M anagem ent P rogram After being installed, the management program starts automatically. Then every time the USB Stick is connected to the PC, the management program starts automatically. You can also double-click the shortcut icon on the desktop to start the management program. R em oving the US B Stick 1. Double-click in the notification area. Then the Unplug or Eject Hardware dialog box appears. 2. Select the corresponding hardware and then click Stop. 3. When the message "It is safe to remove the device" appears, remove the USB Stick. Uninstalling the M anagem ent Program 1. Choose Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs. 2. System and operator errors can be detected and corrected. It is recommended that the system performance check is performed prior to any usage of the system in order to guarantee reproducible results. The measurement of the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) is a complicated task and the result depends on the proper functioning of many components and the correct settings of many parameters. Faulty results due to drift, failures or incorrect parameters might not be recognized, since they often look similar in distribution to the correct ones. The Dosimetric Assessment System DASY5 incorporates a system performance check procedure to test the proper functioning of the system. The system performance check uses normal SAR measurements in a simplified setup (the flat section of the SAM Twin Phantom) with a well characterized source (a matched dipole at a specified distance). This setup was selected to give a high sensitivity to all parameters that might fail or vary over time (e.g., probe, liquid parameters, and software settings) and a low sensitivity to external effects inherent in the system (e.g., positioning uncertainty of the device holder). The system performance check does not replace the calibration of the components. The accuracy of the system performance check is not sufficient for calibration purposes. It is possible to calculate the field quite accurately in this simple setup; however, due to the open field situation some factors (e.g., laboratory reflections) cannot be accounted for. Calibrations in the flat phantom are possible with transfer calibration methods, using either temperature probes or calibrated E- field probes. The system performance check also does not test the system performance for arbitrary field situations encountered during real measurements of mobile phones. These checks are performed at SPEAG by testing the components under various conditions (e.g., spherical isotropy measurements in liquid, linearity measurements, temperature variations, etc.), the results of which are used for an error estimation of the system. The system performance check will indicate situations where the system uncertainty is exceeded due to drift or failure. Annex 4.5.2 System Performance check procedure Preparation The conductivity should be measured before the validation and the measured liquid parameters must be entered in the software. If the measured values differ from targeted values in the dipole document, the liquid composition should be adjusted. If the validation is performed with slightly different (measured) liquid parameters, the expected SAR will also be different. See the application note about SAR sensitivities for an estimate of possible SAR deviations. Note that the liquid parameters are temperature dependent with approximately – 0.5% decrease in permitivity and + 1% increase in conductivity for a temperature decrease of 1° C. The dipole must be placed beneath the flat phantom section of the Generic Twin Phantom with the correct distance holder in place. The distance holder should touch the phantom surface with a light pressure at the reference marking (little hole) and be oriented parallel to the long side of the phantom. Accurate positioning is not necessary, since the system will search for the peak SAR location, except that the dipole arms should be parallel to the surface. The device holder for mobile phones can be left in place but should be rotated away from the dipole. The forward power into the dipole at the dipole SMA connector should be determined as accurately as possible. See section 4 for a description of the recommended setup to measure the dipole input power. The actual dipole input power level can be between 20mW and several watts. The result can later be normalized to any power level. It is strongly recommended to note the actually used power level in the „comment“-window of the measurement file; otherwise you loose this crucial information for later reference. System Performance Check The DASY5 installation includes predefined files with recommended procedures for measurements and validation.
