AWS24S User Manual 2.4GHz DSSS SPI Radio for External Antenna UMAWS24S Rev 2v0 Revised March 13, 2007 User Manual 2.4GHz DSSS SPI Radio for External Antenna AWS24S Artaflex Inc. UMAWS24S Rev 2v0 215 Konrad Crescent Revised March 13, 2007 Markham, Ontario, Canada L3R8T9 Page 2 of 10 http://www.artaflexmodules.com 905-479-0148 Introduction One of the bottlenecks that many product developers encounter in incorporating any radio communication device is facing the legal aspect of qualifying the products and going to market without encountering legal problems. The Telecommunication Certification Body (TCB) authorization process in the United States offers manufacturers more than one approval body. The TCB authorization process certifies devices in accordance with FCC rules and policies. The performance of the Artaflex AWS24S radio is measured according to the requirements of FCC rules. The major applicable FCC regulations are described in Section 15.247 (a) to (d). This document gives an overview of the legal issues governing the manufacture and sale of the Artaflex AWS24S wireless module intended for unlicensed operation in the United States under FCC Part 15, Industry Canada RSS-210 and European Union ETSI EN 300 328-2 (Article 3.2 of R&TTE) and ETSI EN 301 489-1 & ETSI EN 301 489-7. OEMs may need to obtain standard equipment regulatory agency certification and for end product deployment in countries where Modular Approval is not recognized. The details of standard equipment regulatory compliance are beyond the scope of this document. OEMs needing standard equipment regulatory testing or who need council for determining regional requirement should contact approved certification and test service providers accordingly. Artaflex can provide assistance in obtaining regulatory compliance when required by the OEM. User Manual 2.4GHz DSSS SPI Radio for External Antenna AWS24S Artaflex Inc. Regional regulatory agency approval may be required to operate AWS24S throughout the world. For purposes of ease of integration, time to market, and product surety, Artaflex submitted the AWS24S to relevant agencies and obtained regulatory approvals for specific countries. The AWS24S was approved under the “Modular Approval (MA) Grant”. This certification represents a significant cost savings to the OEM. The radio certification portion of this grant is transferable to Digital Electronic Device manufacturers given adherence to specific implementation criteria noted herein. Any modification of the AWS24S will void the manufacturer’s warranty. Any alteration or deviation from the documented installation and/or use of the AWS24S will void the MA Grant as it applies to the end-product. In the event the Digital Electronic Device manufacturer alters the herein described and approved installation of the AWS24S, the end-product may require a complete recertification testing by the Digital Electronic Device manufacturer. The MA Grant provides that Digital Electronic Device manufacturers, who incorporate the AWS24S as tested and approved, can be relieved from having to perform the Radio Regulatory certification portion of the respective agency certification. While the OEM for a device into which an authorized module is installed is not required to obtain a new authorization for the module, this does not preclude the possibility that some other form of authorization or testing may be required for the device (e.g., a WLAN into which an authorized module is installed must still be authorized as a PC peripheral, subject to the appropriate equipment authorization). The MA Grant is valid only in countries that recognize the MA Grant certification process. Countries currently accepting the MA Grant include; the USA, Canada, and many European countries as noted in Section 5.2 of this document. Terms and conditions of regulatory approval for these countries are also described herein. However, this “grandfathered” radio certification does not relieve the Digital Electronic Device manufacturers from submitting their device for digital emissions certifications. Electronic devi…

To whom it may concern: Modular Approval is being requested for this device. The following statements detail these requirements and the manner in which the device meets them. The module has its own complete RF transceiver with built in antenna and reference oscillator. The module meets all of the technical specifications applicable to the frequency band of operation. 1. RF Shielding The module contains an internal shield (solid ground plane) as shown in the detailed film layer. The shielding is achieved by the ground plane of the module as well as the die and substrate ground to prevent any RF coupling between the RF circuitry of the module and any wires or circuits in the device into which the module is installed. In addition the traces are very short to minimize undesirable radiation. This can be seen on the detailed PCB film layer provided within this documentation. 2. Buffered modulation / data inputs Data to the modulation circuit is buffered on the module via the WirelessUSB integrated circuit. Refer to the information regarding the on-board serdes (SPI) provided with the file “Data Sheet DSAWP24S” that details the theory of operation. 3. Power supply regulation Power supply regulation is provided within the WirelesUSB integrated circuit that regulates the control voltage to the RF and data circuitry. The maximum allowable voltage that can be used in the chip is 2.4Vdc – 3.6Vdc. The variable input voltage is therefore a voltage regulator. 4. Antenna requirements The module has the antenna integrated (“permanently attached”) onto the PCB. This can be seen on the detailed PCB film layer provided within this documentation. 5. The modular transmitter must be tested in a stand-alone configuration Test data contained in this application is for the device tested as a stand alone device. The module is designed to implement wireless device links operating in the worldwide 2.4-GHz ISM frequency band. It is intended for systems compliant with world-wide regulations covered by Europe ETSI EN 301 489-1, ETSI EN 301 489-7, & ETSI EN 300 328-1, USA FCC Part 15 and Industry Canada RSS-210 standards. The module contains a 2.4-GHz 1-Mbps GFSK radio transceiver, packet data buffering, packet framer, DSSS baseband controller, Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI), and SPI interface for data transfer and device configuration. The radio supports 98 discrete 1-MHz channels (regulations may limit the use of some of these channels in certain jurisdictions). In DSSS modes the baseband performs DSSS spreading/de-spreading, while in GFSK Mode (1 Mb/s - GFSK) the baseband performs Start of Frame (SOF), End of Frame (EOF) detection and CRC16 generation and checking. The baseband may also be configured to automatically transmit Acknowledge (ACK) handshake packets whenever a valid packet is received. When in receive mode, with packet framing enabled, the device is always ready to receive data transmitted at any of the supported bit rates, except SDR, enabling the implementation of mixed-rate systems in which different devices use different data rates. This also enables the implementation of dynamic data rate systems, which use high data rates at shorter distances and/or in a low- moderate interference environment, and change to lower data rates at longer distances and/or in high interference environments. 4.1 Link Layer Modes The AWP24S module supports the following data packet framing features: SOP – Packets begin with a 2-symbol Start of Packet (SOP) marker. This is required in GFSK and 8DR modes, but is optional in DDR mode and is not supported in SDR mode; if framing is disabled then an SOP event is inferred whenever two successi…
